Q.1. Read the following passage carefully:
People moan about poverty as a great evil and it seems to be an accepted belief than if people had plenty of money, they would be happy, and get more out of life. As a rule there is more genuine satisfaction in life and more is obtained from life in the humble cottage of the poor man than in the palace of rich men, who are attended by servants and governesses at a later stage. At the same time I am glad to think they do not know what they have missed.
It is because I know how sweet and happy and pure the home of honest poverty is, how free from perplexing care and social envies and jealousies, how loving , and united the members are in the common interest of supporting the family that I sympathize with the rich man’s boy and congratulate the poor men’s son. It is for these reasons that from the ranks of the poor so many strong eminent selfreliant men have always sprung. If you read the list of the “Immortals who were not born to die.” you will find that most of them have been poor
(i) What is the popular motion about poverty?
Ans: The popular notion about poverty is that it is a great evil.
(ii) Where can one get more genuine satisfaction in life?
Ans: One can get more genuine satisfaction in life in the humble cottage of the poor man.
(iii) Why does the author pity the rich man’s boy?
Ans: The author pities the rich man’s boy because he does not know the sweetness, happiness and purity of honest poverty.
(iv) How has the author compared rich with poor?
Ans: The author feels that genuine satisfaction is obtained from life in the humble cottage of the poor than in the palace of rich men.
(v) What is his conclusion?
Ans: The members of a poor family are united, loving and share a common interest in being supportive to each other. The rich boy does not know these pleasures.
(vi) People moan about poverty. (Frame a wh _ type question?
Ans: (a) perplexed (b) self-reliant
(vii) Find out other words in the passage with similar meanings to:
(a) Confusion
(b). Self dependent.
Ans: What do people moan about?
Q.2. Read the passage below and answer the questions that follows :
Childhood obesity rates have sky-rocketed in recent years. This trend is worrisome because it greatly increases children’s risk for remaining obese in adulthood, which in turn increases their risk for other health related issues such as high blood pressure, heart disease, stroke, cancer diabetes, and respiratory problems which might increase risk of premature death as adults.
Obesity can be the stage for problems too. Obese children are more likely to suffer from low self esteem, depression, anxiety and social ostracism.
It is, therefore, extremely important for parents to see that their children live a healthy lifestyle. Healthy lifestyle includes eating nutritious meals, getting plenty of exercise and adequate sleep every day. These positive health habits will help children grow strong, stay healthy, and decrease the likelihood of obesity.
Healthy diet and adequate exercise are important in preventing Type II diabetes in childhood as well as obesity. Diabetes is a metabolic disease in which the body cells can’t properly break down the sugars from food. The body then starts accumulating the sugars in the bloodstream instead and ultimately stresses out the kidneys, heart, circulatory system, and eyes. Insulin, which is created in the pancreas, is the chemical that breaks down blood sugar. In Type II diabetes, the body does not produce enough insulin to deal with all the sugars coming into the body. This medical condition is termed as “adultonset diabetes’ because the disorder primarily affects adults with poor eating and activity habits.
This trend sometimes has an adverse impact on others. In contrast to those who overeat and don’t get enough exercise, other children become obsessed with over-controlling their food intake and start over exercising.
Media too can sometimes play havoc. By constantly exposing children to a barrage of perfect, photoshopped bodies on television and magazines, children get tempted to imitate those images and go on a strict diet plan. Overemphasis on extreme thinness can again put children at risk of poor self-esteem, unhealthy exercise patterns, and eating disorders such as anorexia.
Children who practice healthy eating and exercise regularly since their childhood tend to maintain a healthy lifestyle through adulthood. It is imperative for parents to teach children to choose healthy food in preference to junk food and also eat in modest portions.
(i) Answer the following questions :
(a) What concern is the writer expressing in the above article?
Ans: Concern for the growing obesity rates and allied problems/risks.
(b) Why does the writer insist that a healthy lifestyle should be adopted right from one’s childhood?
Ans: Then the chances of remaining obese during adulthood are reduced.
(c) Which two factors impact children negatively?
Ans: Being overweight and being underweight.
(d) How does media influence children?
Ans: By showing picture perfect bodies of celebrities, children want to imitate them and go on strict diet.
(ii) complete the following statements in one word phrase :
(a) By saying obesity rate have ______the writer implies that they have increased drastically.
Ans: sky-rocketed
(b) Both overweight and underweight children tend to suffer from __________.
Ans: low self esteem/inferiority complex
(c) Obesity can lead to ______________, ______________including premature death in adulthood.
Ans: high blood pressure, diabetes, heart problems, cancer, stroke (any two)
(d) Type II diabetes can be prevented ___________________and _______________.
Ans: healthy eating, exercising

Deepak
(Class VII)
Pollution has become a big problem. The material prosperity and technological advancement has been responsible for sound, air and water pollution. Mushrooming up of industries and domestic waste pollutes air and water. The industrial waste also makes the agricultural fields infertile. Cutting of forests and conversion of agricultural land into residential areas are becoming a major cause of pollution. Increase in vehicles is also a leading reason to add to the problem and people are forced to wear masks. The temperature is increasing globally, glaciers and icebergs are melting, disturbing the seasonal cycle. We are the ones who are responsible for this pollution, so we should only take the steps to reduce it. We should have chimneys in industries which let out clear smoke. Industrial waste should be treated before being thrown into the rivers and the vehicles should be tested from time to time. Pollution, if not stopped, can at least be reduced to certain extent.
OR
Respected Principal, teachers and my dear friends. Wish you all a very happy good morning. Here I am, Rahul, before you to say a few words on the topic “Slow and Steady wins the race”. The maxim holds the essence of life. It is well said that we must learn to work hard constantly with determination, courage and patience. Slow progress should not make us impatient and difficulties should not discourage us. Anything that is done in haste is only meant for undoing.
Every great achievement, in order to be lasting, must be gradual in its progress. We forget that there is no royal road to success. The meteoric rise of Hitler and his subsequent fall may be compared to the slow rise to eminence of Lincoln after decades of toil. No doubt, the lofty character of Lincoln continues to be admired by the posterity. The city of Rome which finally became the wonder of the civilized world, must have consisted originally of a few houses and huts; and it was only slow degrees that it became famous.
Those who begin to run fast from the outset in the race competition, get tired midway and lose the race. On the other hand, those who run slowly and steadily win the race in the end. Our civilization itself is nothing but the result of slow and steady progress in the field of science and technology. So let all of us vow. We will remain slow but constant until we achieve our destination.
Thank You.
