The dynamic nature of the problems concerning management of borders is brought out by the manner in which the sensitivity of India-Nepal border has changed over a period of time. This border, which has been an open one, was once peaceful and trouble-free. However, with the increasing activities of Pakistan’s Inter-Services Intelligence (ISI) in Nepal, the nature of the border has changed completely. These security concerns need to be addressed urgently.
Operation Sindoor & Crisis Response: In May 2025, following the Pahalgam terrorist attack, India carried out targeted missile strikes (Operation Sindoor) on terror camps in Pakistan and PoK. A ceasefire followed on May 10 after intense four-day hostilities marked by missile exchanges and heightened military readiness.
Military De-escalation: Both nations are nearing completion of a troop drawdown, reverting to pre-conflict deployment levels. However, the agreement highlighted weak crisis management structures and lack of communication mechanisms.
Water Security Rhetoric: Pakistan’s leadership issued stern warnings about the sanctity of the Indus Waters Treaty, with threats of retaliation over any perceived violations.
Trade Restrictions: In May 2025, India imposed sweeping restrictions on land-route imports from Bangladesh, affecting nearly $770 million worth of trade. Key sectors like garments and processed foods were redirected through ports in Kolkata and Mumbai.
Diplomatic Neutrality: Bangladesh adopted a careful, neutral diplomatic posture during the India–Pakistan crisis, urging dialogue and ceasefire from both sides.
Security Infrastructure in Sundarbans: Intelligence-borne threats led India’s BSF to plan seven floating outposts in the Sundarbans to strengthen surveillance amid concerns over infiltration and terror networks via terrain's waterways.
Manipur’s Demographic Security: Former Manipur CM N. Biren Singh called for urgent identification and deportation of illegal immigrants from Bangladesh and Myanmar to secure the region’s demographic balance.
Border Management Progress: India has enhanced forward deployment along the Line of Actual Control (LAC) with 197 operational Border Out Posts (BOPs), improved road access, and increased regular patrols.
Diplomatic Thaw: A notable development in January 2025 was the resumption of direct flights between India and China. In June, Defence Minister Rajnath Singh met his Chinese counterpart at the SCO meeting, pushing for a structured de-escalation roadmap to address the border dispute. Tourist visas for Chinese citizens were also resumed in July 2025.
Strategic Dynamics: Despite these positive signals, underlying competition remains. In particular, the India–Pakistan skirmish became a platform for China to gather signals intelligence, reinforcing strategic rivalry.
Domestic Unrest: Bangladesh saw violent clashes in Gopalganj in July 2025, resulting in deaths and curfews. The violence was political in nature and symbolizes rising internal volatility.
Rohingya & Regional Outreach: Bangladesh, alongside regional partners such as Malaysia and Indonesia, is initiating a joint peace mission to Myanmar, aiming to address the Rohingya refugee crisis in Rakhine State.
Evolving Ties: The recent political shift in Bangladesh, under Muhammad Yunus's interim government, has altered bilateral dynamics. Strategic anxiety stems from Dhaka’s expanding ties with Pakistan and China—such as new foreign consultations and security exercises—which India views as a deviation from its traditionally secure neighbourhood.
Nationwide Exercise – Operation Abhyaas: On 7 May 2025, India conducted “Operation Abhyaas,” a large-scale civil defence drill across 244 districts. Activities included siren tests, blackouts, and evacuation drills, aimed at bolstering readiness amid border tensions.
