Word problems are short stories that use numbers. You need to read the story, understand what is happening, and use addition or subtraction to solve them.
In this worksheet, we will solve word problems related to length and height.
Q.1. The new Christmas tree is 75 inches tall.
The old Christmas tree is 68 inches tall.
How much taller is the new tree?
We need to compare the heights.
Subtract the height of the old tree from the new tree:
75 − 68 = 7
Answer: The new Christmas tree is 7 inches taller than the old one.
Q.2. The Christmas tree with the star is 83 inches tall.
The ceiling of the room is 96 inches high.
Can the tree fit in the room?
The ceiling is 96 inches high.
The tree (with the star) is 83 inches tall.
83 is smaller than 96, so there is enough space.
Answer: Yes, the tree can fit in the room.
Q3. Sam wants to hang 3 stockings.
One stocking is 5 inches wide. The other two are 3 inches wide each.
What is the total width of the three stockings?
Add the width of all three stockings:
5 + 3 = 8
8 + 3 = 11
Answer: The total width of the three stockings is 11 inches.
Q4. A black phone is 5 inches long.
A white phone is 7 inches long.
Which phone is longer?
Compare both lengths:
7 > 5
Answer: The white phone is longer than the black phone.
Q.5. One rack is 19 feet wide.
Another rack is 12 feet wide.
What is the total width when both racks are side by side?
Add both widths together:
19 + 12 = 31
Answer: The racks together are 31 feet wide.
Q.6. The TV stack is 24 feet tall.
The laptop stack is 17 feet tall.
How much shorter is the laptop stack?
Subtract to find the difference in height:
24 − 17 = 7
Answer: The laptop stack is 7 feet shorter than the TV stack.
Q.7. The pine tree is 12 feet tall.
The hedge next to it is 3 feet tall.
How much taller is the pine tree?
Subtract the hedge height from the pine tree:
12 − 3 = 9
Answer: The pine tree is 9 feet taller than the hedge.
Q.8. A tree was 45 inches tall.
Henry trimmed 7 inches off the tree.
How tall is the tree now?
Subtract what was cut from the original height:
45 − 7 = 38
Answer: The tree is now 38 inches tall.
Q.9. Selena planted a tree that was 13 inches tall.
Now it is 61 inches tall.
How much did the tree grow?
Subtract the old height from the new height:
61 − 13 = 48
Answer: The tree grew 48 inches in two years.
Q.10. A water bottle is 37 cm tall.
It is placed on a table that is 50 cm tall.
How far is the top of the bottle from the floor?
Add the height of the bottle and the table:
50 + 37 = 87
Answer: The top of the bottle is 87 cm from the floor.
