Ear to Ear Class 4 Notes EVS Chapter 2

The chapter "Ear to Ear" is about different creatures and the types of ears and skin they have. It also explains how these features relate to how they reproduce, whether by giving birth to young ones or laying eggs. In our universe, we experience things through our five senses: seeing with our eyes, hearing with our ears, smelling with our noses, tasting with our tongues, and feeling with our skin.

Who Has Got My Ears?

The picture above has animals with interchanged ears. It makes the animals in the picture look funny. If we look at these animals we will find:

• The elephant has Mouse’s ears on its head.
• Buffalo has Deer’s ears on its head.
• Giraffe has Elephant’s ears on its head.
• Rabbit has Giraffe’s ear on its head.
• The mouse has Dog’s ears on its head.
• Deer has Buffalo’s ears on its head.
• A dog has Rabbit’s ears on its head.

Animals With and Without Ears and Hair on Their Skin

• Ears are sensory organs found in various forms in animals. Even if we can't see them, animals we can't communicate with still have ears.
• Ears and skin are linked because they indicate whether an animal gives birth or lays eggs. 
• The patterns of ears are influenced by the hair on the skin. 
• Animals with visible ears typically have hair on their skin, while those with small or hidden ears, like birds, have feathers covering them. 
• Humans, elephants, tigers, giraffes, dogs, and other animals with visible ears and hair on their skin give birth to their young. 
• Fish, reptiles, birds, and other creatures without visible ears usually lack hair on their skin and lay eggs.

Here in this table, the names of some animals are given whose ears we can see and whose ears we cannot see.

India's national animal is the tiger. Tigers live in forests and are in danger because people are destroying their homes.

Egg-laying vs. Live Birth:

Some animals lay eggs to have babies, like hens and ducks. They lay their eggs in nests, and then the eggs hatch into baby animals. Other animals, like cats and cows, don't lay eggs. Instead, they give birth to babies directly. The babies grow inside their mother's body before being born.

Pet Animals:

Pets are like friends that live with us at home. Dogs and cats are common pets. We give them names, like "Buddy" or "Fluffy." Just like us, they need food to eat, walks to stretch their legs, and love and attention from us. Sometimes, they can feel upset or angry, just like we do. They might growl or bark to let us know how they feel.

Extinct Animals and Dinosaurs:

Dinosaurs were big creatures that lived a long time ago, but they're not here anymore. We can learn about them from books, movies, and fossils, which are like the bones of dinosaurs. Even though dinosaurs are gone, some animals today, like crocodiles and birds, remind us of dinosaurs because they share similar features or behaviors.

Whose Skin

• Animals have different patterns on their skin because of their hair or feathers. If we imagine an animal without any hair, it would look smooth without any patterns.

• Examples:
  Imagine a zebra without its stripes. It would just look like a plain-colored horse.
  A leopard's spots are part of its skin pattern. Without them, it would look like a big, smooth cat.
• Observations:
  Cows and buffaloes have visible hair on their skin. You can see it when you get close to them. They have patterns because of their hair.
  Even elephants, which look smooth, have hair on their skin if you look closely. But from far away, it's hard to see.
