India, France, UAE Hold Trilateral Talk to Boost Maritime Security

  • The focal points for India, France, and the United Arab Emirates met in trilateral fashion. Maritime Security, Humanitarian Aid and Disaster Relief, Blue Economy, Regional Connectivity, Cooperation in Multilateral Fora, Energy and Food Security, Innovation and startups, Supply Chain Resilience, and Cultural and People-to-People Cooperation were some of the potential areas of trilateral cooperation that the three sides discussed.

Wasifa Nazreen Becomes First Bangladeshi to Scale World’s Second Highest Peak K2

  • Mountaineer Wasifa Nazreen became the first person from Bangladesh to ascend Pakistan’s administered K2, the second-highest mountain peak. She scaled the K2 mountain peak, which is 8611 metres (28,251 ft) high, and then descended to the base camp.
  • When a climber descends from the mountain and returns to base camp, the summit is said to have been reached. The 39-year-old mountaineer Wasifa paid respect to all the known and unidentified martyrs of Bangladesh, from the language campaign to the liberation war, after completing this historic job.
  • She urged her people to never lose up and draw strength from the past. Wazifa greeted Bangladesh on its 50th anniversary and thanks everyone who had assisted her from the top of the world’s most treacherous mountain, stating, “Happy 50th Bangladesh, here’s to the next great 50.”

Kuwaiti Emir Appoints Ahmad Nawaf Al-Ahmad Al-Sabah as New Prime Minister

  • The Kuwaiti emir on Sunday issued a decree appointing Ahmad Nawaf Al-Ahmad Al-Sabah as the prime minister and tasking him with forming the new cabinet. As required by the constitution, the prime minister-designate will then inform the National Assembly of his nomination before assuming office, according to the Center for Government Communication of Kuwait.
  • In May, the Kuwaiti emir approved the resignation of then Prime Minister Sabah Al-Khaled Al-Hamad Al-Sabah and his cabinet, in which Ahmad served as first deputy prime minister and minister of interior. Ahmad was born in 1956 as the eldest son of Kuwaiti Emir Nawaf Al-Ahmad Al-Jaber AlSabah. He served as the Kuwait National Guard Deputy Commander between November 2020 and March 9, 2022.

Dinesh Gunawardena sworn in as Sri Lanka’s New Prime Minister

  • Senior politician, Dinesh Gunawardena has been appointed as the new and 15th Prime Minister of Sri Lanka, by President Ranil Wickremesinghe. He succeeds former prime minister Ranil Wickremesinghe, who has been sworn in as the country’s 9th president.
  • Gunawardena, parliamentarian of the Sri Lanka Podujana Peramuna (SLPP) party, took his oath in the capital Colombo in the presence of other senior legislators.
  • Gunawardena has been appointed Home Minister in April by then President Gotabaya Rajapaksa. With Gotabaya fleeing the country and resigning from his position, earlier prime minister Ranil Wickremesinghe was sworn in as the eighth President of Sri Lanka on July 21.

Amid Global Aviation Chaos, UK Launches Passengers' Charter to Address Airport Disruption Issues

  • The British government has launched an “Aviation Passenger Charter” to help passengers know their rights if they are faced with problems at airports after the widespread disruption seen this year. The new charter will help passengers know what to do if they are confronted by cancellations, delays or missing baggage. It has been developed by the British government in partnership with the aviation sector & travel industry.
  • Long queues and cancelled flights caused by staff shortages have caused chaos at times, prompting airlines to cut back their schedules as the industry struggles to keep up with a surge in demand after the COVID-19 pandemic. Last month, the government published a 22- point support plan to avoid further disruption, including telling airlines to run “realistic” summer schedules and promising to speed up security checks.

Third edition of Vietnam-India bilateral army exercise “Ex VINBAX 2022” to begin at Chand mandir in Haryana

  • The 3rd edition of Vietnam-India Bilateral Army Exercise “Ex VINBAX 2022” is conducted at Chandi mandir, Haryana from August 1 to 20, 2022. The theme of Ex VINBAX 2022 is the “Employment and deployment of an Engineer Company and a Medical Team as part of United Nations Contingent for Peace Keeping Operations”.
  • The exercise will further strengthen the bilateral relations between India and Vietnam.
  • The conduct of Ex VINBAX – 2022 as a field training exercise with enhanced scope from previous editions of bilateral exercise will strengthen mutual confidence, and interoperability and enable sharing of best practices between the Indian Army and Vietnam People’s Army.

PM Modi launches India's first international bullion exchange in Gujarat

  • Prime Minister Narendra Modi has launched the ‘India International Bullion Exchange (IIBX)’, at the Gujarat International Finance Tec-City (GIFT City) near Gandhinagar, Gujarat. IIBX is India’s first international bullion exchange. The exchange, which was announced in Budget 2020, will sell physical gold and silver. The exchange will be open for jewellers with a net worth of Rs 25 crore and above to participate.
  • This will allow qualified jewellers to directly import gold through IIBX.The International Financial Services Centres Authority (IFSCA) is the regulator of IIBX. IIBX is promoted by five market institutional investors i.e., CDSL, India INX, NSDL, NSE and MCX.
  • Ashok Gautam will head IIBX as MD and CEO. He took charge in February 2022 and worked with IDBI Bank before this. He has earlier worked with the State Bank of India (SBI).

Bharat Forge inks an agreement with Talgo India to manufacture high-speed trains

  • A joint venture to produce high-speed passenger trains has been established by BF Infrastructure Ltd., a fully owned subsidiary of Bharat Forge Ltd., and Talgo India Pvt Ltd., a fully owned subsidiary of Spanish manufacturer Patentes Talgo S.L. The cooperation will take advantage of forthcoming local requirements in the field as well as new economic prospects in the railways sector.
  • The Atmanirbhar Bharat programme of the Union government is anticipated to benefit from this collaboration. It will assist in bringing cutting-edge, high-speed rail technology and solutions.
  • The planned partnership will concentrate on establishing a hub for production, maintenance, and life cycle support for the next generation of lightweight, energy-efficient high-speed trains made of aluminium.

  • Tata Advanced Systems successfully delivered the locally developed Quick Reaction Fighting Vehicle to the Indian Army. The contract to provide QRFV-Med vehicles to the Indian 
  • Army was successfully completed. These armoured vehicles will increase the nation’s protector’s ability to fight in all weather and terrain situations and will offer protection while moving.
  • These vehicles will improve the Indian Army’s operational capability during future battles.
  • In the last four years, from 2018–19 to 2021–22, the expenditure on defence procurement from foreign sources decreased from 46% of the total expenditure to 36% as a result of the steps implemented by the Centre to promote the manufacture of indigenous defence equipment.

Grand statue of Chandrashekhar Azad to be installed in Bhopal

  • In Madhya Pradesh’s Bhopal, a large statue honouring Amar Shaheed Chandrashekhar Azad will be erected. The statue site will be created as a source of inspiration for young people, with soil from Azad’s hometown of Bhabra being used at its base.
  •  On the 116th anniversary of Amar Shaheed Chandrashekhar Azad’s birth, Chief Minister Shivraj Singh Chouhan spoke at the opening ceremony of the first state-level Youth Mahapanchayat, which was held in Bhopal.
  • Anurag Thakur, the Union Minister for Information, Broadcasting, Sports, and Youth Affairs, also spoke to the programme electronically from New Delhi.
  • Anurag Thakur, a union minister, added that no challenge is too great for Indian youth. In the next 25 years, he urged the youth to elevate India to the status of Vishwa Guru and work assiduously to create an independent India.

India to set up joint theatre commands of tri-services: Rajnath Singh

  • DM Rajnath Singh announced the setting up of joint theatre commands of the tri-services to enhance coordination among the armed forces.
  • The defence minister also said India is moving quickly from being the world's largest importer of defence equipment to an exporter.
  • He was speaking during a programme organised by the Jammu Kashmir People's Forum here to pay tributes to the martyrs of the Indian Armed Forces.
  • "Keeping in view (joint operations as seen in Operation Vijay in Kargil), we have decided to set up joint theatre commands (in the country)," Singh said.
  • Paying tributes to the Kargil martyrs, the defence minister said the country cannot forget their supreme sacrifice to safeguard the country's territorial integrity and sovereignty.
  • "It is the duty of the society and the people to give their utmost respect to the martyrs and their families," he said.
  • "Whatever support you can offer, do to for their families. It is the responsibility of each citizen," he added.

Droupadi Murmu Takes Oath As India's 15th President; First Tribal Woman To Hold Highest Constitutional Post

  • Draupadi Murmu took oath as the 15th President of India. She is now the first tribal and the second Woman to be the president of India. In the Central Hall of the Parliament, Draupadi Murmu administered the Oath by Chief Justice of India N.V. Ramana.

India's first AI-powered digital Lok Adalat launched in Rajasthan

  • During the 18th All India Legal Services Authorities’ convention, which was held here,National Legal Services Authority Chairman Uday Umesh Lalit unveiled the first digital Lok Adalat driven by artificial intelligence. Rajasthan State Legal Services Authority’s (RSLSA) digital Lok Adalat was created by Jupitice Justice Technologies, the organization’s technological partner.
  • N V Ramana, the Chief Justice of India, opened the two-day event in the presence of Kiren Rijiju, the Union Minister of Law and Justice, and Ashok Gehlot, the Chief Minister of Rajasthan.

NRTI in Gujarat renamed as Gati Shakti Vishwavidyalaya, gets central university tag

  • National Rail and Transportation Institute upgraded as Gati Shakti Vishwavidyalaya, the deemed to be university will be upgraded to a central university. The university has been renamed as Gati Shakti Vishwavidyalaya. 
  • The Union Cabinet gave its approval to introduce a Bill in Parliament, namely, the Central Universities (Amendment) Bill, 2022 to amend the Central Universities Act, 2009 for setting up of Gati Shakti Vishwavidyalaya (GSV).
  • The amendment would help in converting the National Rail and Transportation Institute (NRTI), a Deemed-to-be university into Gati Shakti Vishwavidyalaya, a Central University.

Commonwealth Games 2022 : Mirabai Chanu wins first gold Medal for India

  • Daughter of India, weightlifter Mirabai Chanu has won India’s first Gold Medal at the Commonwealth Games 2022 in the Women’s 49Kg weightlifting category. She aggregated a total of 201kg (88kg+113kg) to stamp her authority in the competition and achieve a Commonwealth Games record in the process. 
  • The silver went to Mauritius’ Marie Hanitra Roilya Ranaivosoa (172kg) and the bronze to Canada’s Hannah Kaminski (171 kg).
  • Last year, Chanu won a silver medal in the 49kg category of Women’s weightlifting event at the Tokyo Olympics. 
  • And with that, she became the first Indian weightlifter to win a silver medal in Olympics. Chanu also become the second Indian weightlifter to win an Olympic medal after Karnam Malleswari bagged bronze in the 69kg category at the 2000 Sydney Games when the weightlifting arena was opened to women for the first time.

Jeremy Lalrinnunga wins gold in Men's 67kg weightlifting finals

  • India’s Jeremy Lalrinnunga has won the gold medal in men’s 67 kg category weightlifting at the 2022 Commonwealth Games. 
  • The 19-year-old Youth Olympic champion lifted a total of 300kg (140kg+160kg) to get the first position. 
  • This is the second gold for the country and fifth medal overall. Samoan weightlifter Vaipava Nevo Ioane secured a silver medal with a lift of 293 (127kg + 166kg) and Nigeria’s Edidiong Joseph Umoafia won bronze, 290kg (130kg+160kg).
  • Jeremy Lalrinnunga is an Indian weightlifter from Aizawl, Mizoram. He represented India in the 2018 Summer Youth Olympics in Buenos Aires. He won the gold medal in the Boys’ 62 kg category weightlifting with a lift of 274 kg (124 kg in snatch and 150 kg in clean and jerk).
  • It was India’s first gold medal in the Youth Olympics Games. Jeremy won the silver medal in the Asian weightlifting championship. At the 2019 World Weightlifting Championships,

Leicester Cricket Ground of England named after Indian legend Sunil Gavaskar

  • England’s Leicester Cricket Ground has been named after India’s legendary cricketer, Sunil Gavaskar. 
  • The Leicester Cricket Ground, the ownership of which lies with Bharat Sports and Cricket Club, has decided to name the ground after Gavaskar to acknowledge his immense contribution to uplifting Indian Cricket to a certain height.
  • There has been a ground already named after Sunil Gavaskar in the Kentucky area of the United States of America (USA) and there is another ground going through its finishing touches in the Zanzibar area of the African nation Tanzania which is also named after the former Indian opener.
  • He was the first cricketer to score 10,000 runs and once held the record for most number (34) of centuries.
  • During the 70s and 80s, when West Indies were ruling world cricket, Gavaskar was
  • impressed with his impressive technique against the Windies’ fast bowlers. He was also part of the Indian team that won the 1983 World Cup.

PV Sindhu, Manpreet Singh named India's flagbearers at Commonwealth Games opening ceremony


  • Ace India badminton player P.V. Sindhu has been chosen as the flagbearer of the Indian contingent for the opening ceremony of the Commonwealth Games 2022. The opening ceremony will be held on July 28, 2022, at Alexander Stadium in Birmingham.
  •  She was the flag-bearer at the opening ceremony of the 2018 Commonwealth Games on the Gold Coast, where she won silver in the women’s singles event.
  • Olympic champion Neeraj Chopra, who was also the defending champion in the Commonwealth Games having won the gold in Gold Coast four years ago, was expected to be the flag-bearer. But a groin injury following his silver medal at the World Championships forced him to pull out and the Indian Olympic Association picked Sindhu to be the flagbearer from a three-member shortlist.

Swiss Open 2022: Casper Ruud battles back to defeat Matteo Berrettini in Gstaad, claims ninth career title

  • Norway’s Casper Ruud has won the Swiss Open Tennis Tournament 2022 held in Gstaad, Switzerland. 
  • He defeated Italy’s Matteo Berrettini in the final by 4-6, 7-6(4), 6-2. 
  • It was Ruud’s 9th Association of Tennis Professionals (ATP) title. The Swiss Open is Ruud’s 3rd title in 2022, the other two titles are Buenos Aires and Geneva Open. Ruud had also won the 2021 Swiss Open title.
  • Ruud snaps the 12-match unbeaten streak of Berrettini, who lifted trophies in Stuttgart and London earlier this year. It was Casper Ruud 9th ATP Title. Earlier this year, Ruud finished as the runner-up at the French Open, losing to Spanish ace Rafael Nadal.

  • Grammy and Oscar-winning music composer, AR Rahman has come up with the ‘Vanakkam Chennai’ (Welcome Anthem) for the upcoming International Chess Olympiad, 2022. Directed by Vignesh Shivan, the music video features chief minister MK Stalin, grandmaster Vishwanathan Anand, and music maestro AR Rahman, who has composed and sung the theme song. 
  • The music video also features director Shankar’s daughter as a Bharatanatyam artiste.
  •  The terrific music video has been praised by netizens for showing the culture of Tamil Nadu impressively.
  • This year, the Fédération Internationale des Échecs will organise the 44th International Chess Olympiad in Chennai, the capital of Tamil Nadu.
  • The 44th International Chess Olympiad, the world’s biggest chess event, will be held at Poonjeri Village in Mamallapuram from July 28 to August 10. The venue is a UNESCO heritage site, located about 50 kilometres from Chennai, Tamil Nadu.

New A+ Category Introduced For Umpires By The BCCI

  • The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) has introduced a new A+ category for its umpires and Nitin Menon, along with ten other officials, have been grouped in the category.
  • Umpires in A+ and A categories are paid Rs 40,000 a day for a first-class game while Rs 30,000 a day are paid in the B and C category.
  • The others in the A+ category include four international umpires: Anil Chaudhary,
  • Madangopal Jayaraman, Virender Kumar Sharma and K N Ananthapadmabhanan.
  • Rohan Pandit, Nikhil Patwardhan, Sadashiv Iyer, Ulhas Gandhe and Navdeep Singh Sidhu are also part of the A+ category.
  • Twenty umpires including C Shamshuddin form the A group, 60 are in Group B, 46 in Group C and 11 in Group D which falls in the 60-65 age bracket.

Tokyo to host 2025 World Athletics Championships

  • The World Athletics Council has selected Tokyo (Japan) to host the 2025 World Athletics Championships. 
  • At the World Athletics Council Meeting in Oregon, USA, the Council also announced that the 2024 World Athletics Cross Country Championships will be held in Medulin and Pula in Croatia and the 2026 World Athletics Cross Country Championships will be held in Tallahassee, Florida.

  • Startup Incubation and Innovation Centre (SIIC) at IIT Kanpur has launched “NIRMAN”
  • Accelerator Programme, supported by the department of science and technology, the government of India.
  •  The programme will focus on the manufacturing startups engaged in healthcare and agriculture domains to help them overcome the challenges from their prototype-to-market journey.
  • A total of 15 startups will be selected under the programme. They will be given the opportunity to accelerate their product’s journey from lab to market.
  • The best performing startups among the cohort of 15 startups will receive a cash award of up to ₹10 Lakh.
  • SIIC comes with a vast experience of working with promising innovators and startups that can leverage optimum social impact. This collaboration with the department of science and technology aims to revive the manufacturing domain in the country.

Defence minister Rajnath Singh launched Y-3023 Dunagiri, Project 17A frigate

  • Union Defence Minister Rajnath Singh has launched the fourth P17A stealth frigate ‘Dunagiri’ into the Hooghly River in Kolkata.
  • The Project 17A frigate is built by Garden Reach Shipbuilders Limited. The P-17A class is a follow-on of the P-17 Shivalik Class with improved stealth features & advanced weapons.
  • The first two ships of the P17A Project were launched in 2019 and 2020 at MDL and GRSE respectively. The third ship (Udaygiri) was launched at MDL on 17 May 22 earlier this year.
  • Security challenges in the Indian Ocean region and Indo-Pacific are constantly increasing.
  • In order to achieve the Prime Minister’s Vision of ‘SAGAR’, i.e., Security and Growth for All in the Region’ and to protect, preserve and promote India’s national maritime interests, the Indian Navy, Indian Coast Guard and other organizations have to increase the infrastructure and assets so that the country stays ahead of the curve in dealing with these challenges.
