The VARC section is one of the three sections of the CAT Exam, the other two being Quantitative Ability (QA) and Data Interpretation & Logical Reasoning (DILR). It tests a candidate's ability to comprehend, analyze, and draw inferences from written passages, as well as their knowledge of English language and grammar.
The VARC section in CAT 2022 will have 26 questions with a maximum score of 102. Three marks are awarded for each correct answer, and one mark is deducted for each wrong answer.
The VARC percentile is calculated based on the candidate's raw score in the VARC section and the performance of all the candidates who appeared for the exam. The IIMs use a normalization process to ensure that the scores of all candidates are compared on an equal footing. The normalized score is then converted into a percentile rank.
A good VARC score in CAT is subjective and varies from year to year. However, to secure admission to top IIMs or other premier management institutes, a candidate should aim for a VARC score above 90 percentile or around 50 marks out of 102. A score above 95 percentile or around 60 marks out of 102 is considered excellent.
Some tips to improve your VARC score in CAT include practicing reading and comprehending various texts, developing a strong vocabulary, improving grammar and sentence structure, and attempting mock tests to get a sense of the exam format and difficulty level.
The difficulty level of the VARC section in CAT is subjective and varies from year to year. However, many candidates find the VARC section relatively more challenging than the other sections due to the comprehension and analytical skills required to answer the questions.
