Here are 9 things you need to know about the De Novo

Selection System

  1. Screening for the De Novo Selection System can be done online, similar to exams like GRE, or at a nearby center. It is recommended to take the test once every three months, with each individual having three chances. This change will reduce the testing time from the current five days to just three days.
  2. This will cut down the time by half to 3 days from current 5 days.

  3. The test will be held in two stages – Stage 1 and Stage 2 as similar to the current process.
  4. Stage 1 testing will likely be a screening test held at a designated test center near the candidate's home, similar to regular CETs (Common Entrance Tests). After completing Stage 1 and being selected, candidates will proceed to Stage 2, which will take place at one of the existing selection centers. More information about Stage 1 testing will be available soon.
  5. Stage 2 selection involves three testing techniques: Interview, Psych (Psychological Tests), and GTO (Group Testing Officer). However, the procedure for Stage 2 is slightly different.

  6. In the Psychological Tests, the Thematic Apperception Test (TAT) will be replaced by the Situation Apperception Test (SAT), which includes nine pictures instead of twelve. The Word Association Test (WAT) and Self-Description Test (SRT) have also undergone significant changes. The new selection procedure does not include the Self-Description Test (SDT).

  7. The GTO series includes two rounds of Group Discussion (GD), followed by a Group Planning Exercise (GPE) called Combined Situation Planning (CSP). This is followed by Outdoor Task Execution 1 (OTE 1), which resembles Progressive Group Task (PGT), and Outdoor Task Execution 2 (OTE 2), which resembles Half Group Task (HGT). Next is a combination of Individual Obstacles (IO) and Group Obstacles (GOR) called Combined Obstacle Course (COC). Finally, there is a Leadership Situation (LS) that resembles the Command Task. The De Novo process does not include the Lecturette and Final Group Planning Task (FPGT).

  8. The interview takes place either on day 1 or day 2 after the completion of the respective test. The interview process remains largely the same with minor changes.
  9. The final day of the De Novo process involves a final board conference where the results of the Individual Obstacles (IO), Group Testing Officer (GTO), and Psychological tests will be reviewed. Based on these findings, candidates will be recommended or not for further selection.
  10.  According to sources, there will be a 1.5 km run for the aspirants. It is not a competitive run, but candidates are required to complete it within a given time frame. Marks will be awarded based on the time taken, with 4-5 minutes considered good, 6-7 minutes average, and over 8 minutes being the worst or zero. Further details regarding this aspect are yet to be clarified.
  11. The DIPR and other bodies working on this new selection system have come up with the new sets of OLQs, so the 15 OLQs we are following in the present system might not match with the new selection system.

Conclusion

In conclusion, the De Novo Selection System is currently undergoing trials at the Bangalore SSB and is expected to be implemented at all SSBs by 2019. By reducing the testing period to three days, this new system will enable a larger number of candidates to be evaluated, helping to address shortages.
Candidates should focus on the current SSB interview and standards and should not be concerned about the new SSB interview procedure until it is officially implemented. However, the implementation of the new three-day SSB interview may take longer than anticipated, and some aspects may still undergo changes before the final implementation. Therefore, aspirants are advised to concentrate on the current SSB procedure as the De Novo system will take time to be fully established.
