What GTO Looks for In a Group Discussion?

Effective communication skills are essential in a GD. English is preferred as some participants may not understand Hindi, which is not widely spoken in certain regions. Therefore, it is important to keep this in mind.
Group Discussions, commonly known as GDs, are a regular part of selection processes for various organizations. In the case of the SSB (Services Selection Board), GDs have a different tone. During the screening round, the GD may involve discussing a vague picture, while during the GTO (Group Testing Officer) round, it focuses on a specific topic of interest.
The common factor in all SSB activities is the evaluation of Officer-Like Qualities (OLQs) in the candidates. However, the difference between GDs in the SSB and other job interviews is that SSB GDs involve a psychological assessment and a search for specific qualities. Therefore, it is important to keep this in mind and perform and prepare accordingly.
Group discussions naturally involve sharing suggestions and viewpoints, and the same applies to GDs. However, people perceive GDs differently, sometimes turning them into chaotic situations. Remember that a GD is simply a group discussion about a topic, and it is important to adhere to the norms of a group discussion.
Ample time will be provided for everyone to express their views. Many individuals have misconceptions about GDs, believing that speaking more or being the first to speak will give them an advantage. However, this is not the case, and sometimes a few individuals can disrupt the entire group dynamic. I will address the "fish market" situation in a separate article. Now, let's explore what the GTO looks for in a candidate during a GD:

  • Effective communication skills are a must in a GD. English is the preferred language to accommodate participants from regions where Hindi is not widely spoken.
  • Leadership is a key attribute observed by the GTO, but being the first to speak does not guarantee leadership. The GTO assesses various characteristics of a leader. The moderator can also be perceived as a leader, so choose the role that suits you best.
  • Demonstrating depth of knowledge and presenting relevant information about the topics discussed can help you stand out in the group. Support your arguments with examples.
  • Listening to fellow group members is essential as it contributes to a fruitful discussion. Sometimes, the GTO may ask for a conclusion, and the person who listens attentively performs well as they are aware of all the relevant points.
  • It is crucial to understand how to participate and behave appropriately in a group setting. Adhere to these guidelines diligently. Keep working hard towards your goal and wait to see the final outcome of your efforts.

You should know what to do and how to behave in a group and that should be followed diligently. So keep on working hard towards your goal and see what could be the final result off your hard work.
