PERT is a planning and control system designed to aid top management in project planning, research, problem-solving, decision-making, and control. It analyzes the tasks involved in completing a project, focusing on determining the minimum time required for completion. PERT is probabilistic in nature, considering the probability of events, situations, or activities occurring according to the designed plan. While PERT offers valuable insights, it also has limitations. Its large network charts can become unwieldy, making it harder to manage projects effectively. Additionally, the human element and unexpected disruptions can impact the accuracy of PERT predictions.

Critical Path Method (CPM)

CPM, developed by Dupont in the 1950s, is an essential technique for effective project management. Comparison of PERT and CPM

PERT is probabilistic, considering ranges of activity durations and the probability of falling within those ranges, while CPM is deterministic, relying on historical data for activity duration estimates. PERT focuses on uncertainties, whereas CPM emphasizes time/cost trade-offs. Both techniques aid in project planning, but their approaches cater to different aspects of project management.
