Weaponization of disturbance in the Temples of democracy

Context
The Vice President of India expressed his concern over the disturbance that has been weaponized in the temples of democracy.

Weaponization of disturbance in the Temples of democracy

  • Democracy is about discourse, discussion, deliberation, and debate, therefore interruption and disturbance are antagonistic to democratic values.
  • The disruption has been weaponized in the democratic temples, which need to be open twenty-four hours a day, seven days a week to guarantee justice for all.
  • There cannot be a Question Hour on days when there are disruptions in parliament. The purpose of the Question Hour is to increase transparency and accountability in government.
  • When considering democratic principles and good governance, it is impossible to justify the absence of question hour.
  • The Vice President emphasised that while dissent and disagreement are normal parts of the democratic process, it is nothing short of a curse for democracy when those disagreements turn hostile.
