Sansad TV: Perspective- The Population Paradox | Current Affairs & Hindu Analysis: Daily, Weekly & Monthly - UPSC PDF Download

Introduction

The world's population took a very long time to reach 1 billion, but then it grew seven times larger in just about 200 years. In 2011, the global population reached 7 billion, and this year it's set to go past 8 billion. Predictions say it might reach around 8.5 billion by 2030, 9.7 billion by 2050, and about 11 billion by 2100. This huge growth happened because more people are living to have kids, birth rates changed a lot, cities got bigger, and more people moved around. About 61% of all people live in Asia, with China and India having the most people. India might even have more people than China by 2027. In the future, most of the world's population growth will happen in Africa. But, in about 55 countries, especially in Europe, the population might go down by 2050, with 26 of them seeing at least a 10% decrease.

Basics

  • Population explosion means a sudden big increase in how many people live in a place.
  • Many countries around the world are having a population explosion now.
  • In the last 200-300 years, the number of people on Earth has grown a lot.
  • It's guessed that the human population will go up by 1 billion in the next 10 years.
  • Population explosion usually happens when more babies are born than people dying.
  • Some folks think it's a problem, but others see it as a big chance for a country to reach its goals.

Challenges

  • The number of babies each woman has varies a lot between rich and poor people.
  • This affects many things like our goals for better living, ending hunger, and sickness.
  • There aren't enough jobs growing, and they're not evenly spread.
  • We don't have much time, so we need to use this population growth to help our economy.
  • Changing India's economy from not-so-rich to a bit richer is a big challenge.
  • While the older population is growing a lot (70% by 2050), the whole population isn't growing as much (56%).
  • Women and families now want fewer kids, but they can't always plan that.
  • In India, about 13% of the time, kids are born when they're not wanted.
  • The real challenge is making life better because about 21% of older people have serious health problems. Some places have way more people growing than others.

Way Forward

  • To keep growing, we need to spend money on things like schools, water, and hospitals.
  • Stopping mothers and kids from dying should be important in family planning.
  • China and Japan controlled how many people they had with different plans.
  • We could do the same, but we need to make sure it works for us.
  • Women should get good healthcare, and girls should go to school.

Conclusion

  • People who study this think India's growing population could be good or bad.
  • To make it good, India needs to make better rules for education, health, and stuff like roads and buildings.
  • We have to help young people have better jobs and skills.
  • If we don't, they might get angry and cause problems.
  • We need to work with young people and help them start their own businesses.
  • If we don't do this, we'll miss a chance to use our young population to help the country.
  • It could also lead to more joblessness and poverty, which would make things worse for our economy and society.
