Subject and Predicate | English Olympiad for Class 3 PDF Download

Subject

The subject of a sentence is the person, place, thing, or idea that the sentence is about. It's usually a noun or a pronoun. The subject tells us who or what the sentence is talking about.

Example: "The cat" in the sentence "The cat is sleeping."

Predicate

The predicate of a sentence tells us something about the subject. It usually includes a verb and may also include other words that describe the action or state of the subject. The predicate tells us what the subject is doing or what is happening to it.

Example: "Is sleeping" in the sentence "The cat is sleeping."

So, in the sentence "The cat is sleeping," "The cat" is the subject because it tells us what the sentence is about, and "is sleeping" is the predicate because it tells us what the cat is doing. Understanding subjects and predicates helps you build clear sentences, communicate effectively, write well, comprehend what you read, and develop analytical skills.
