Spoken

Spoken language is how we communicate with each other using words that we say out loud. We use spoken language when we talk to our friends, family, and teachers.

Features of Spoken Language:

Informal: Spoken language is often less formal than written language. We might use slang words or shortcuts when we talk with our friends.

• Example: "Hey, wanna go play outside?" (informal)

Conversations: We have conversations when we speak. We take turns talking and listening to each other.
Example:

• Person 1: "What's your favorite color?"
• Person 2: "Blue! What about you?"

Emotions: We can express our feelings more easily in spoken language. We can sound happy, sad, excited, or angry.

Example:

• Happy: "Yay, I got a new toy!"
• Sad: "I miss my old school."

Social Functions: Spoken language serves various social functions such as greetings, apologies, introductions, and requests.

• Greeting: "Hello! How are you?"
• Apology: "I'm sorry for being late."
• Introduction: "Hi, I'm Sarah. Nice to meet you!"
• Request: "Can I borrow your pencil, please?"

Written

Written language is how we communicate using words that are written down, like in books, letters, or on the computer. We use written language when we write stories, essays, or even just notes to our friends.

Features of Written Language:

• Formal: Written language is often more formal than spoken language. We use complete sentences and proper grammar.
  • Example: "Dear Mr. Smith, I hope this letter finds you well." (formal)
• No Immediate Response: When we write something, we don't expect an immediate response like in spoken conversations. The other person can read it later and respond when they have time.
• Permanent: Once something is written down, it stays that way. We can go back and read it again later, unlike spoken language, which can be forgotten.
• Example:
  Written: "The cat chased the mouse."
  Spoken: "Did you see that? The cat was chasing the mouse!"

Let's practice recognizing spoken and written expressions:

• Spoken (Apology): "I'm sorry for breaking your toy."
  • This is spoken language because it's an apology said out loud.
• Written (Request): "Could you please pass me the salt?"
  • This is written language because it's a request written down, perhaps in a note or a message.
• Spoken (Greeting): "Good morning, everyone!"
  • This is spoken language because it's a greeting said out loud when entering a room.
