Key Points of the Story
Detailed Summary
In the story, there is a happy village named Ramnagar near a wide river. The people of Ramnagar live peacefully and enjoy farming on their rich, fertile land. Ten miles away, a town decides to build a new road that would go close to Ramnagar and destroy some of their best fields. The villagers of Ramnagar are upset and hold meetings to find a way to stop the road from being built. They use slow and unusual methods, like using cups to take water from the river and cutting down trees with small knives. People from the town think Ramnagar’s ways are strange and say the villagers are crazy.
A District Officer visits Ramnagar and sees the villagers doing their unique tasks. He mistakenly believes they are mad and decides to reroute the road away from the village. As a result, Ramnagar remains peaceful, and the villagers continue their happy lives. The story teaches us to respect and appreciate different ways of doing things, showing that even if something seems silly to others, it can be very smart and effective for those who do it.
Another part of the story introduces Gurappa, a skilled craftsman in a village in Karnataka, India. Gurappa makes beautiful handmade wooden combs with great care and skill. He works hard every day, cutting wood and shaping the combs. Even though his combs are lovely, it is hard for him to sell them because many people now buy cheap, factory-made combs. Gurappa loves making combs because it was his father's tradition. When someone tries to sell his combs in the city, they prefer plastic ones instead, making Gurappa sad. The story shows the importance of supporting traditional crafts and appreciating the hard work and talent that goes into handmade items.
