Punjabi Film Industry

Communication in Punjab | Punjab State (PPSC) PSC: Preparation - PPSC PCS (Punjab)

Punjabi Film Industry before Partition

  • Lahore was a major hub for film production before the partition of India.
  • Many early producers, directors, and actors in Hindi cinema were of Punjabi origin.
  • Attempts to produce Punjabi films began in 1934, with projects like Heer Ranjha, Mirza Sahiban, and Raja Gopi Chand being initiated but left unfinished.
  • The first released Punjabi film was Sheila or Pind Di Kudi, produced by KD Mehra, followed by Heer Sial, both of which were successful.
  • Lahore's large Punjabi population created a significant market for Punjabi films, attracting many artists, producers, directors, and technicians from Bombay and Calcutta to settle there.
  • Notable figures who moved to Lahore included Shanta Apte, Motilal, Chandra Mohan, Hiralal, Noor Jehan, and BR Chopra, who started his film magazine Cine Herald.
  • Some hit films of the pre-partition era included Gul-e-Bakavali, Puran Bhagat, and Laila Majnu.

  Punjabi Film Industry after Partition

  • The partition marked the decline of the thriving Punjabi film industry, with many filmmakers and actors relocating to Bombay for better opportunities.
  • It took nearly a decade for the displaced Punjabi population to settle in their new environment, and early Punjabi films made in the late 1950s were unsuccessful.
  • In 1960, films like Posti and Do Lachhian achieved success, along with others such as Bhangra, Vilayati Babu, and Yamla Jatt.
  • All India Radio played a crucial role in promoting Punjabi films by airing their songs, generating public interest and increasing viewership.
  • In the 1980s, films addressing social issues like Sarpanch, Rano, and Put Jatta De were produced, although the industry was affected by the peak of militancy in Punjab during this period.
  • The 1990s saw critically acclaimed films like Vaisakhi and Kachehri, while the late 1990s brought commercial successes such as Mahaul Theek Hai, Badla Jatti Da, and Shaheed-e Mohobbat-Boota Singh.
  • The first biopic, Shaheed Udham Singh (1999), received positive reviews and performed well at the box office.

Emergence of New Themes

  • The Punjabi International Film Academy Awards in August 2012 in Toronto highlighted this evolution.
