Newly Identified Property of Metallo-nanozymes could transform Bioenergy and Therapeutic Applications

Context

Scientists at CSIR-CLRI developed Cu-Phen, a next-generation nanozyme that mimics natural enzymes by safely controlling electron transfer.

This can have various applications in energy and medical sector.

New Research on Metallo-Nanozymes

  • Scientists have studied metallo-nanozymes, which are artificial enzymes that work like natural enzymes using metal ions.
  • These nanozymes can control electron transfer, a key process for energy production in cells.
  • Current nanozymes have problems like uncontrolled electron flow, which may cause harmful reactive oxygen species (ROS) and damage cells.
  • A new nanozyme called Cu-Phen was created by scientists at CSIR-CLRI, Chennai.
  • Cu-Phen is made using copper ions and phenylalanine and has a well-designed active site.
  • It mimics natural enzymes and safely transfers electrons with the help of a protein called cytochrome c.
  • This prevents the formation of harmful byproducts and may help in energy, health, and environment-related technologies.

MeitY Notifies Electronics Components Manufacturing Scheme

Context

The Ministry of Electronics and IT (MeitY) has launched the Electronics Components Manufacturing Scheme to boost India’s electronics ecosystem.

New Electronics Components Manufacturing Scheme

  • It aims to deepen domestic manufacturing of passive components like resistors, capacitors, relays, sensors, etc.
  • The scheme complements the India Semiconductor Mission, which focuses on active components.
  • It supports horizontal sectors such as consumer electronics, medical devices, automobiles, and power grids.
  • India’s electronics production has grown five-fold, and exports have grown six-fold in the last decade.
  • iPhone exports alone contributed ₹1.5 lakh crore in FY 2024–25.
  • The scheme will support capital equipment and precision tooling industries.
  • Three incentive models: turnover-linked, capex-linked, and hybrid.
  • Employment generation is mandatory for all beneficiaries.
  • The scheme is open for stakeholder feedback before finalization.

FAQs on PIB Summary- 9th April, 2025 - Current Affairs & Hindu Analysis: Daily, Weekly & Monthly - UPSC

1. What are metallo-nanozymes and what role do they play in bioenergy applications?
Ans. Metallo-nanozymes are nano-sized enzyme mimetics that incorporate metal ions to enhance their catalytic activity. They play a critical role in bioenergy applications by facilitating various biochemical reactions that can convert biomass into biofuels or improve the efficiency of energy conversion processes, leading to more sustainable energy sources.
2. How could the newly identified properties of metallo-nanozymes transform therapeutic applications?
Ans. The newly identified properties of metallo-nanozymes, such as their stability and catalytic efficiency, can lead to advancements in therapeutic applications by enabling more effective drug delivery systems and improving the treatment of diseases. They may also help in developing enzyme-based therapies that are more efficient and targeted, thereby reducing side effects and enhancing patient outcomes.
3. What is the Electronics Components Manufacturing Scheme announced by MeitY?
Ans. The Electronics Components Manufacturing Scheme is an initiative by the Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology (MeitY) aimed at enhancing the manufacturing capabilities of electronic components in India. This scheme provides financial incentives and support to domestic manufacturers to boost production, reduce dependency on imports, and promote innovation in the electronics sector.
4. How do metallo-nanozymes differ from traditional enzymes in terms of their application?
Ans. Metallo-nanozymes differ from traditional enzymes primarily in their structural composition and stability. While traditional enzymes are organic and can be sensitive to environmental changes, metallo-nanozymes are more robust due to their inorganic metal components. This makes them suitable for a wider range of industrial applications, including harsher conditions where traditional enzymes might fail.
5. What implications do the advancements in metallo-nanozymes have for environmental sustainability?
Ans. Advancements in metallo-nanozymes have significant implications for environmental sustainability by enhancing processes that convert waste materials into valuable biofuels, thus reducing waste and greenhouse gas emissions. Additionally, their use in bioremediation can help clean up pollutants in the environment, contributing to a healthier ecosystem and promoting sustainable practices in energy production and waste management.
