BharatGen

Launch of BharatGen: India’s First Indigenous AI LLM

• Union Minister Dr. Jitendra Singh introduced BharatGen, India’s pioneering indigenously developed and government-funded multimodal AI Large Language Model (LLM) designed for Indian languages.
• The initiative aims to promote ethical, inclusive, and multilingual AI innovation across the country.

Highlights of BharatGen Launch

• BharatGen is the first government-funded, indigenously developed, AI-based multimodal LLM specifically for Indian languages.
• Platform Features: Integrates text, speech, and image modalities, supporting 22 Indian languages.
• The project is built under the National Mission on Interdisciplinary Cyber-Physical Systems (NM-ICPS) and executed through the TIH Foundation for IoT & IoE at IIT Bombay.

Objectives and Vision

• The National AI Mission aims to develop AI that is ethical, inclusive, and multilingual, grounded in Indian values and ethos.
• The mission seeks to empower critical sectors such as healthcare (e.g., AI doctors in rural telemedicine), education, agriculture, and governance.

Governance and Technology Synergy

• CPGRAMS (Public Grievance Portal) has been integrated with multilingual AI feedback systems, setting a global standard for grievance redressal.
• The National Education Policy (NEP) 2020 promotes interdisciplinary learning by combining humanities and technology, enhancing employability and innovation.

Implementation Framework

• A network of 25 Technology Innovation Hubs (TIHs) has been established, with 4 hubs upgraded to Technology Translational Research Parks (TTRPs).
• The BharatGen Mission is built on pillars of tech development, entrepreneurship, human resource development, and international collaboration.

Impact on Healthcare

• AI doctors communicating in native languages used in remote villages can significantly improve healthcare outcomes by building trust and connecting patients with super-specialty hospitals.

Startups and Local Innovation

• Over 3,000 agri-tech startups have been supported, exemplified by initiatives like lavender farming in Jammu & Kashmir, showcasing rural tech diffusion.
• These efforts align with various schemes such as the PM MUDRA Yojana, PM SVANidhi, and PM Vishwakarma Yojana.

Institutional Collaboration

•  Collaborations among the Department of Science and Technology (DST), Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology (MEITY), Department of Administrative Reforms and Public Grievances (DARPG), Ministry of Skill Development and Entrepreneurship (MSDE), and academic and private sectors (e.g., Infosys Co-founder) have been established. 
•  Memorandums of Understanding (MoUs) have been signed to enhance inter-departmental cooperation.
