•  Trump’s 20-point peace plan, which received acclaim from Arab and Muslim leaders at the Sharm el-Sheikh summit, sparked hopes for peace. 
•  However, the region’s profound political and religious divides remain unresolved, posing challenges to lasting peace. 

Trump’s Ceasefire Announcement

•  During his speech to the Israeli Parliament (Knesset), U.S. President Donald Trump announced that the ceasefire between Hamas and Israel marked “the historical dawn of a new Middle East.” 
•  The Sharm el-Sheikh summit in Egypt saw Arab and Muslim leaders praise Trump’s 20-point peace plan. 
•  While many called him a peacemaker, experts warned that the region’s deep conflicts cannot end overnight. 

Trump’s Promises and Reality

•  Trump claimed Hamas agreed to disarm, warning, “If they don’t, we will disarm them — perhaps violently.” 
•  However, Israel, even after two years in Gaza, has not disarmed Hamas. 
•  Trump also stated that the Iran threat was neutralised, but Iran remains a powerful influence in the region. 

Regional Complications

• Hezbollah (Lebanon) : Despite military setbacks, Hezbollah remains strong in Lebanese politics. 
• Houthis (Yemen) : The Houthis continue to control major cities, including the capital, Sana’a. 
• Iran : Iran maintains its regional influence despite U.S. efforts to diminish it. 
• Arab States : Arab nations are increasingly concerned about Israel’s military actions, such as the bombing of Qatar. 

 These ongoing tensions highlight the instability of the Middle East and the fragility of peace efforts. 

What Needs to Be Done

•  Trump should prioritise maintaining the Gaza ceasefire. 
•  The subsequent objective is to facilitate Hamas’s relinquishing of power in Gaza and to urge Israel’s withdrawal. 
•  Following these steps, the U.S. along with its Arab and European allies should collaborate on establishing a roadmap for a Palestinian state.

•  Despite assertions of a “new Middle East,” the region continues to grapple with persistent conflicts and power dynamics. 
•  Key challenges such as Hamas’s disarmament, Israel’s occupation, and Iran’s regional influence remain significant hurdles.
