“TO SERVE IS BEAUTIFUL, BUT ONLY IF IT IS DONE WITH JOY AND A WHOLE HEART AND A FREE MIND.”

 – Pearl S Buck

The journey to civil services has been an exhilarating experience to say the least. The inception of this thought was laid by my father who always encouraged taking up civil services as a career. Though his wisdom was farfetched but my calling came during rigors and fancies of corporate life. The corporate life comforted with focus on individual gains but somewhere the heart always felt a vacuum.

The journey started as a search to understand the cause for this feeling. Fortunately, I got introduced to the social sector through a good friend who helped in understanding the sense of satisfaction achieved through a selfless act. Although my engagement with Social sector was limited in scope and time yet an exposure to this sector re-kindled the desire to think seriously about making a career in this sector.

At this juncture, I was mentored and immensely helped by Mr. Sajiv Nair to take the final decision of appearing for the Civil Services Examination. I must credit the patience of my family who helped me through this process. The scope of serving in civil services is unparalleled; it has the distinction of being the career where officer’s job is to bring positive change in the lives of people while performing designated duties.

The platform which is provided by civil services in India is unique due to the enormous responsibility endowed right from the start of their career. The mere fact, that after completion of initial 4-5 years of the service tenure, an IAS, IFoS or IPS officer is responsible to look after their deputed districts in their domains, provides an example of the trust endowed by Government of India in the officers recruited by UPSC. This is a career for passionate individuals who harbor desire to positively impact the society around them. It is not a job but a 'service' where one works to build a society of their dream.

This book comes as a piece for aspirants who wish to know a little bit about the various civil services which are recruited by UPSC.
