Rearrangement of Sentences | English Language & Comprehension for SSC CGL PDF Download

Introduction 

Rearrangement of sentences implies the arrangement of jumbled sentences in a systematic and meaningful way. In this type of question, generally six jumbled sentences are given. The first and the sixth sentences remain in their places.

  • Rearrangement of sentences or Para jumbles have some sentences either numbered (1,2,3 and so on) or lettered (a, b, c and so on) given in a jumbled form. The sentences are followed by choices of possible combinations of arrangements of these sentences. You have to choose the most logical order of arrangement of these sentences to form a meaningful, coherent paragraph.

Important steps  while solving a question of rearrangement:

1. You need to understand the idea behind the paragraph. If you can understand the idea/theme of the paragraph it is easy to put the sentences in order then.

2. You should look out for the starting or the concluding sentences in the question.

3. You need to know the relationships between different sentences to put them in the right sequence.

4. Transition words and contrasting words also help in finding clean relationships between sentences of the sentence rearrangement.

5. The whole paragraph should have a coherent idea and flow when arranged in the correct order.

Types of Sentence Rearrangement Questions

There are basically 4 formats in which the parajumble questions can be asked in the various competitive exams:

  • The Basic Format: This is the format where all the statements are given in a jumbled form and candidates need to arrange all the statements logically.
  • Static First Statement: In the second type of format for parajumbles, the first statement is given as static and candidates have to arrange the other statements logically, such that the first statement remains constant.
  • Static Last Statement: Just like a static first statement, the last statement given can also be static and candidates need to arrange the other sentences to make the paragraph logical, with the last sentence constant.
  • Static First and Last Statement: The first and last statement can be static and candidates are required to arrange the leftover sentences between these two statements to make it logically correct.

(a) They are beaten, chained, trained and killed mercilessly.

(b) But nobody hears and pays heed to their cries.

(c) Animals are our friends, auxiliaries and necessary for our survival.

(d) Our vision should be a world where animal welfare matters.
