Creating with the Seaboard RISE - 4.4 Solo Cello using Logic and Vienna Symphonic Orchestra Video Lecture | Introduction to Seaboard Rise: Advance Music Production

so we've been talking a lot about
polyphonic expression and how cool it is
to have each finger with its own glide
slide and press and that's wonderful for
lots of instruments but the Seaboard
rise is also amazing and monophonic
instruments particularly solo legato
orchestral instruments and for this
example I'd like to use VSL and show how
we can really get a lot of expression
using the Roli seaboard rise so the
first thing I'd like to do is set up the
Roley dashboard in single mode so we'll
say single mode make sure we're sending
on channel 1 and I'll set my pitch Bend
range to 12 semitones then we'll go into
VSL and see if we can start assigning
the dimensions of touch to the VSL
musical parameters Vienna symphonic
library is a sampler designed
specifically for orchestral instruments
a cello can be played many ways staccato
put ceccato tremolo and the player may
even move between those during a musical
phrase one of the strengths of Vienna
symphonic library is it gives us a
matrix of view of moving through these
articulations and we can use the XY
touchpad on the Seaboard rise to
navigate that matrix and choose the
articulation we want at any time let's
go to the basic view here in Vienna
symphonic library and we see X and
y-axis under matrix control here let's
look at the Roley dashboard over there
we see that we have the XY pad here the
y-axis is sending CC 1:14 and the x-axis
is sending CC 1 1 3 so we can use those
to control change messages to navigate

back to BSL and we'll set those
controllers up x-axis will be control
change 1 1 3 and the y axis will be 1 1
4 and let's see how this works if I play
right now we'll be on a single
articulation
kind of a sustaining articulation but go
to my XY touchpad I move up you see that
it's moving along that matrix axis and
now we get staccato and so if I play a
line we can get quite dramatic and
realistic lines by manipulating that
kind of y-axis in the matrix now if we
move along the x axis we also have
access to all the other articulations so
I might play playing tremolo now I might
be playing pizzicato just about moving
around to the axis it's really a
wonderful control for Vienna now I'd
like to add a couple more kind of
dimensions of touch to this patch
the first one is slide which we often
use for a Tambor control and Vienna has
a built-in global filter for this now it
is quite subtle but that's because it's
trying to be realistic let's see if we
can set that up we'll go to the advanced
window in Vienna and then to the control
map tab and we'll see master filter
listed here and we can assign CC 74 to
it and we'll play so it does have a nice
kind of dynamic to it but it's not
overly dramatic so it doesn't sound like
a synthesizer and we can use it for
those nice kind of subtle crescendos
during notes now the final thing that I
want to add to this patch is control of
dynamics during the course of a note one
of the most important things about
sustaining instruments like a cello is
that we can change its volume over the
course of a note and CC 11 or control
change 11 is a standard MIDI message we
call it expression and it's used in
almost all orchestral libraries to
control the dynamics over the course of
a note I'm going to use the expression
pedal input or the pedal input to
control CC 11 have a foot pedal that is
a continuous foot pedal so as I push
down it sends a continuous run of data
up and down a little different than a
typical sustain pedal let's see how we
would set that up I'm going to go back
to the dashboard and I'll go to
the pedal section and we'll switch this
over so that it's sending CC 11 which is
the expression controller let's see how
it works I'll play a chord and we only
hear that come in my pedal Goes Down
that's a really nice way to control
these cellos
