the first video of this course of
Cortland programming series so first of
all since you have enrolled in this
course so let me tell you the importance
of Kotlin so what are the key highlights
for Cortland at present now in the
Google i/o to k17
the Cortland has been announced as the
official Android language so bye-bye to
Java and in recent years the Cortland
has gained a tremendous popularity in
terms of in terms of developing
applications such as Android and this
Cortland language has been developed by
JetBrains company now this is the
JetBrains company that has created the
IntelliJ IDE and if you are an Android
developer then you must be knowing that
the Android studio has been built on top
of the IntelliJ IDE so now you can
understand the importance of the
jetbrains company it is the creator of
IntelliJ IDE and also the Cortland
language now the Cortland language is
actually the open source project
primarily under the Apache 2 license
which simply promotes the developer
ecosystem as it is open source and it
makes the developers community united
and contribute to this open source
project more freely and now next
proceeding forward can we say is it
meant to replace Java just because in
google io to k17
the Cortland has been announced as the
official language of Android so is it
going to replace Java in future if you
take my opinion the answer is strict no
because at present the maximum number of
Android projects at present has been
developed in Java so it is not going to
replace Java but we can use Cortland
along with Java in the same project and
why we are actually comparing Cortland
with Java just because the court length
is more flexible version of Java you can
see it is actually the JVM language and
it is a more powerful language compared
to Java and the Android applications can
be built on Cortland
along with using Java and C++ alongside
and proceeding forward why Cortland is
more powerful than Java
or white is called more powerful version
of Java because the Kotlin is more
expressive and more concise in the less
amount of code you can get more output
compared to Java where you have to write
a large number of lines of code to
express the same thing so we can say
Cortland is actually more concise than
Java in the less number of lines you can
express more and cortland also provides
the safety features for your application
such as it is immutable in nature and
the null ability factor so in Cortland
you won't find the null pointer
exception compared to Java where the
developers often used to get the null
pointer exceptions while running the
application in the runtime so say
bye-bye to the null pointer exceptions
in case of Cortland so these two
features makes our application more
healthy and safer to use which means
less number of crash reports will be
there for your applications and now
proceeding forward this ensures more
performance of your applications at the
hands of user and now at the end let us
check out some other features of
Cortland that are worth to discuss about
such as the Cortland is actually the JVM
language now the Java is the first JVM
language so similar to Java the the
Cortland is also the JVM language so you
need to install the java jdk that
contains the java virtual machine before
you start developing any applications
and the syntax in case of Cortland
programming language is more expressive
and concise as we already discussed it
in the previous slide and it simply
supports high order functions now in
case of Java we can only pass variables
or reference variable to the functions
right but in case of court length we can
simply pass functions within the
function that is apart from variables we
can also pass function as a parameter
and next the Cortlandt also support the
lambda expression and all
so it has a large number of features
such as string templates and there are
many more we will discuss it throughout
the course itself and then the most
important feature of cotton is that the
cortland and Java are together
interoperable now what does this
interoperable means it simply means that
inside the same application you can have
both Java and Cortland files that is
suppose you are making any e-commerce
application so inside that application
you can have Cortland programming codes
as well along with the Java programming
codes now currently if your application
is built on top of Java then please do
not worry about it
you can add Cortland codes in the same
Java project now the question arises if
we have both Java and Cortland files
within the same project then how can
they interact now this is the beauty of
using Cortland and Java because they are
interoperable so you can call the Java
functions from the Cortland files and
vice-versa that is you can also call the
Cortland codes from the Java files so in
short at the end of the scores you will
fall in love with Cortland and hence I
would say you have come to the right
