How To: Quilted Wash Bag | Make-up Bag Tutorial DIY Video Lecture | Sewing: A Tutorial for Beginners - Fashion Designing

hello I'm Anika from a torso and welcome
to our quilted wash bag or makeup bag
tutorial so in this tutorial I'm going
to be showing you how to make one size
of these beautiful wash bags or makeup
bags we've got a pattern to 3 slightly
different sizes and but obviously you're
welcome to amend the paths and slightly
to make the size that you wish
now the first size we've got is a
largest size which is this one here
which I guess would be fabulous for
putting all of your wash bag contents in
especially if you've got a lot of stuff
like I do then I guess this would be
probably the right size and it's also
great if you're going on holiday because
you want something large that's going to
be able to fit everything in now all of
the ones the little things that you'll
see that we've made have been in this
gorgeous Liberty cotton lon and we've
quilted all of them with a little
backing of wadding however you don't
have to quote them if you're not going
to quote them I would recommend that you
use a slightly heavier weight fabric
sewn upholstery fabric or something of a
slightly heavier weight because
otherwise it won't support itself now
we've got a zip in the top of all of
them and in our two largest sizes we've
actually lined them with a waterproof
lining because obviously when you are
making a wash bag or makeup bag you
really don't want your toothpaste or
your shampoo or mascara to spill
everywhere and obviously with the
waterproof lining it's much easier to
clean up so moving on to the middle size
this is the middle size at which crater
which is a super far sides because it is
just perfect for if you've got your
makeup collection or maybe you want to
wash back and you haven't quite as many
products as I have then I guess this
might work for you and again we've got a
lovely Liberty cotton on and we've lined
this with a waterproof lining and then
the smallest size which I guess you
could use other purse or you could use
this to put a mascara or lipstick in for
your handbag and this we actually
haven't used a waterproof lining and
we'll just use a simple cotton lining
for this one you can see in here and
again we've got the Liberty cotton lon
so we're going to go through all of
these techniques so the quilting
techniques how to put a zip in how to
put a lining in and obviously how to
create the shape whether it be without
the boxy corners or whether it be with
the boxy corners that we've added here
we'll show you both of those options
then you can really personalize it to
what you want to make so let's get
started let's start by looking at the
materials and supplies that you need to
create your wash bag you will need a
fabric for the exterior we're going to
be working with a Liberty tunnel on
cotton again as we did for the other
three bags and we quilted this with a
100% cotton wadding which creates a
really nice lightweight finish but does
provide some support obviously you're
welcome to use a different weight of
Codding this is a polyester wadding in a
medium weight and obviously the thicker
the weight of the wadding the more
structure and shape your bag will have
if you don't wish to quilt your bag or
your fabric I would recommend using
something slightly heavier than a cotton
because you may find that the bag won't
hold its shape very well you will need a
zip and we will discuss the size of the
zip and the size of the bag you wish to
create in the next section you will need
some fabric for lining here is a
waterproof fabric that we spoke about
but you can use a cotton or anything
that works for you and you will need
some thread for sewing this is just a
butterman sew all 100% polyester then in
terms of the tools that you will need
you will need a large pair of scissors
for cutting out a smaller pair would be
great great for trimming threads some
pins a ruler for marking your quilting
lines and for cutting out your shape to
size and a removable pen of some
description that can be chalk can be a
pen that comes off with water or air or
it could even be a pencil whatever
you've got to hand sew collect that your
material and supplies and we will start
by looking at the size of the bag you
wish to create
so in this tutorial we're going to be
showing you how to make the middle-sized
wash bag or makeup bag if you would like
the sizes for the smaller bag or the
larger bag please follow the link in the
description box below to the blog post
so for the medium-sized
bag you're going to need a six inch zip
and to measure the zip you will need to
measure from the top of the pull here
down to the end of the zip stopper
obviously you're welcome to shorten your
zips
I wouldn't recommend shorting the method
ones because cutting them and sewing
over them can be a bit of a problem but
that will be fine with the plastic zips
now the width of the fabric or the
squares that we will need for our 6-inch
zip and this is 15 and a half
centimeters from here to here so the
width of the fabric we're going to need
is eight and a quarter inches and that's
in the width and seven and a quarter in
the length okay so eight and a quarter
in the width seven and a quarter in the
length in terms of centimeters we're
going to be working with a width of
twenty point one centimeters and a
length of 18 centimeters now we have
included the seam allowances already for
you in those measurements we're going to
be working with a half inch seam
allowance or a one centimeter seam
allowance for ease so now we should be
ready to cut out your squares once you
know the size of the bag you're going to
be working with we can draw that on to
the wrong side of your fabric measure
the width and the length of the
rectangles and Mark that on with chalk
or with a removable pen or pencil and
draw your nice rectangles on we're then
going to cut those out we're going to
cut out two in the exterior fabric and
two in the lining fabric now the other
thing we need to cut out is other tabs
for the end of the zip now we need two
of these and the size of these is one
and a half inches by one and a half
inches but is four centimeters by four
centimeters and we need two of those
so you should have to exterior fabric
pieces in the measurements that you have
chosen to in our lining and these all
can be cut out now I'm happy for you to
do that with a pair of scissors and two
of the little tabs that are one and a
half inches square or four centimetres
square I will let you cut out all of the
pieces that you need so that we can get
started
sewing
so now we're going to take the little
tabs that we've cut out these are the
pieces for the end of the zip that were
the square one and a half inches by one
and a half inches four centimeters by
four centimeters now if you're working
with inches we're going to press under a
quarter of an inch on the two on two
opposite sides or a one centimeter seam
allowance for ease this is a little bit
fiddly but just use your iron and the
steam to do this then we're going to
press the hole of the thing in half okay
and you're going to do this for both of
them and obviously you will check that
they are the same size so complete that
for both of your tabs and then I'm going
to show you how we attach them onto your
zip now I'm going to show you how to put
the zipper tabs on the end of the zip
what we've done here is measured from
the zip stopper here half an inch and
that's if you're working with tabs that
measure half an inch or one centimeter
if you're working with metric
measurements you want to measure from
the zip stopper and then cut off any
excess and then we can take the tab and
wrap it over the end like so it doesn't
matter how much sticks out on either
side you want to make sure that you're
pressed edge here is similar to the
pressed edge on the back and then we can
place a pin in there just like so and
I'm going to show you how to sew that in
a second now what do we do for the top
end of the zip okay so we do exactly the
same here we measure from the end of the
zip stopper here to the end of the
zipper tape and we cut that off at our
half an inch or one centimeter
measurement we're going to position
these as close together as we possibly
can
there and then I'm going to take the
zipper tab and sit that on top like so
this is a little bit tricky and a little
bit fuller than the other side you may
need to use two pins so I probably will
pin one side of this first
and then the other side like so
once you're happy and you've got this on
both ends of zip drove me to say machine
and I'll show you how we say them now
we're going to be sewing the tabs on to
the end of the zip for this you are
going to need to put the zipper foot on
to your sewing machine and we've
actually moved our needle to the far
left so that it's in line with the edge
of our liver foot here hopefully you can
do that with your machine too now we're
going to start again by holding on to
the threads and putting the needle into
our fabric by turning the hand we're on
the side of the machine and the plan
here is to really be sewing along the
edge of the fold of the fabric okay we
want to be sewing literally about an
eighth three millimeters away from this
edge so I'm going to be guiding my
zipper foot along the edge of the fabric
to show that we'll start by going
backwards and forwards and then we're
going to be going through and this is a
little bit tricky you've only got the
one pin in there so you know you can
always take it out gradually
but please don't sew over it take that
out now and I'm just going to hold this
if you had cut off your zip to create
this I would recommend being very slow
as you go over it obviously you will
find you can't sew over a metal zip but
plastic zip you can do but very very
slowly and you may need to just use the
hand wheel to walk the machine over that
now we've got to the end we're going to
go backwards and forwards again lift up
the foot and the needle we can take that
out and cut that off and let me show you
that so we're literally about one eighth
of the way from the edge of the fold
three millimeters okay now I'd like you
to do the same for the front of the or
the top of the zip that we've got here
and then we can start looking at the
quilt thing if you wish to quilt your
fabric if you wish to quilt your fabric
you will need to draw the quilting lines
onto the right side of your fabric now
we decided to work with quilting lines
that are a distance of half an inch
apart in both directions
if you're working with centimeters I
would recommend using a 1 centimeter
however obviously you're welcome to do
larger or smaller quilts it's really up
to you and if you look at our blog post
you will see the size quilts that we
used for the other sizes of the bags so
what you'll need to do is use a ruler
and it doesn't really matter where you
start we tend to sort of create an angle
up here that we like but it doesn't
really matter and we're going to start
drawing our quilting lines onto the
fabric and you want to use a pen that's
going to come off you can use this pen
comes off with water you can get some
that come off with air or obviously you
can use some chalk once you've drawn
your first line we're going to position
the ruler on to that line so that the
half-inch line is sitting of the ruler
is sitting on the line we drew
previously and we can draw the next line
and we're going to move that all the way
along the width of our fabric drawing
the lines when you wish to come back the
other way we're going to turn the ruler
around and the only thing that the only
tip that I have here really is that you
want to make sure that all your lines
going across the first way sit in line
with the lines on the ruler so that they
are parallel not so that you haven't got
an opposite angle like this so we're
sitting them parallel and then we can
draw our first line and then again we'll
continue drawing the half-inch lines
either side until you've finished the
whole of your piece of fabric like this
if you wish to quilt the fabric you will
need to do this for both of the exterior
pieces of your fabric and we'll show you
how to pin that on to our wadding and
sew those in a second once you have
marked the hole of the right side of
your exterior fabric with your quilting
lines we're going to position that onto
some wadding as I mentioned earlier
we're using the cotton wadding here but
obviously you can use a polyester
wadding and the weight of the wadding is
really up to you the thick of the
wadding these differ the finished
product you want to lay that on top like
so
I would recommend cutting the wadding a
little bit larger than your exterior
fabric and we're just going to position
it some pins into your exterior fabric
through the fabric and what
and really these can be sort of all over
the place is just hold it them together
as we sew so just randomly position the
pins hold everything nice and securely
join me at the Machine and I'll show you
how to sew this so now we're ready to
sewing machine and we're going to sew
down all of the lines that you drew on
for quilting we've got our next earring
fabric with the right side facing up the
lines all marked on in short or
removable pen and our wadding behind
okay and that's all pinned on securely I
would recommend starting in the middle
somewhere and working your way right
both sides in one direction and then
obviously doing exactly the same on the
lines going the opposite way we're going
to be using a walking foot for this if
you have a walking foot I would
recommend it it's very good when working
with the different layers of fabrics
because it will give what's called an
even feed and help feed them through the
machine nicely if you haven't not a
problem we're going to start by
positioning the needle into the fabric
holding our threads as we do so we're
going to be going backwards and forwards
right at the very end a couple of
stitches forwards a couple of stitches
backwards and then all I'm going to be
doing is guiding it down feeding the
line that we've drawn into the middle of
my foot so that I'm sewing accurately on
the drawn line I'm just holding the nice
fabric nice and flat as you do so we're
just going to be using a straight stitch
for this with a stitch length of 2.5
millimeters which is the standard length
complete this all the way until you get
to the other end the end here we're
going to be going backwards and forwards
again secure it one thing I would do is
make sure you keep on top of your
threads when you're doing this we get to
the end we're going to lift up the foot
and the needle pull that out and cut
that off so I would recommend trimming
your threads here because it would be
best to keep on top of those they can
otherwise get caught up into the next
stitching line now I'll leave you to sew
all of your lines as I said moving out
from the one that you've sewn in one
direction and the other and then sew all
of them the other way Joey back here
once you've done that
make sure that you have trimmed the
threads from the end of the zipper tab
please don't worry if this doesn't look
too neat because you're actually only
going to see a very small amount of the
zipper tab when we sew this together now
our first step is to actually create the
sandwich to start sewing the zip into
the bag we need to have the right side
of our lining facing up here and
actually we're going to measure in and
draw a little line with chalk or a
removable pan at either end if you
remember when we were discussing the zip
and the width of the tabs we wish to
create here we've got a half an inch tab
if you're working in metric it will be 1
centimeter we're measuring in in from
the edge here 1/2 an inch or 1
centimeter and then we've also got a
little bit of space for a gap ok now
this is important to make sure that it
all turns around really neatly we need
1/8 or three millimeters of space for
the gap and we did discuss this when we
spoke about the zip earlier so I'm going
to be measuring in half an inch from my
tab and one eighth for my gap so that's
five eighths in total if you're working
a metric it will be 1.3 centimeters I'm
just going to draw a little line there
with chalk and then that on both ends ok
now my zip here should sit nicely with
the zipper tab sitting on both of those
ends which it does now I'm lining up the
top edge of my zipper tape with the top
edge of my lining your tab will extend
over this please don't worry about that
ok now Mike Styria fabric if you've
quilted this that you should have
trimmed all of your threads I would
recommend cutting down the wadding to
the size of the exterior fabric if
there's any of that peeking out around
the edge and then also if you have used
a pen that comes up with water please
remove that now so now we're ready with
our quilted fabric obviously if you
haven't quilted your fabric that's
absolutely fine we're going to turn this
over so we've got the right side facing
down to the right side of our fabric and
the right side of our lining are going
to go together with
sit in the middle and we're going to
match up all of these top edges here
okay so you want to make sure that the
top edge of the lining exterior fabric
and zipper tape all sit together and
we're going to pin that in place and as
I said you will find that the zipper tab
does come out of that so pin that all in
place along this top edge and then we're
going to sew this in along here and then
we're going to do exactly the same for
the other side but if you pin you're
ready dramatis a machine and I'll show
you how we do this so now we're going to
sew this is a sandwich together as we
mentioned a second ago we've got our
exterior fabric lining and zipper all
sandwiched together I've got my zipper
foot on my machine and I've moved my
needle so that it's as close to the edge
of the zipper foot as it will go I'm
going to be using a standard straight
stitch with the length of 2.5
millimeters and I'm going to start by
going backwards and forward
now one thing you will need to do is you
will need to start with the zip down
because you'll find that you can't get
past the zipper pull okay so we're going
to be running the edge of my zipper foot
here against the edge of the teeth and I
can just about feel them right there
okay I'm going to be sewing as close to
the zip as I can basically now I'm
coming up to where my zipper pull is so
I'm going to put my needle down and I'm
going to lift my foot and I'm going to
open up my fabric so that I can get to
the zipper pull I'm going to really
fiddly pull that back there we go
a little bit fiddly to do but you just
need to move that out of the way so that
we can put our foot down and continue
sewing and taking the pins out as we go
and you can see here that the teeth are
sitting right up against the edge of the
first
all the way down we get the end we're
going to go backwards and forwards lift
up the foot and the needle trim our
threads and then we have it once you
have sewn down at the edge of the zip
you can trim off any extra little bits
of fabric or wadding that are poking out
okay now we can turn this all to the
right side and you'll see here that
we've got a really nice finish along the
edge of the zip now what we're going to
do is top stitch along the edge of the
zipper edge stitch so that we're sewing
really close to this about 183
millimeters away and that's just going
to keep it all together
stop the lining from coming out when you
open up the bag the first thing we
really need to do here is to pull on
both the exterior fabric and the lining
make this really really taut and then
pop some pins in here and what this does
is as we're stitching through on this
side it makes sure that you're stitching
on the other side is in the same
position and that you don't end up with
your lining coming over onto your zip
which is really easy to do if you miss
out this step so be sure you pull on
both of them and position a few pins I
would aim for about three or four along
the width off the bag
once you've pinned this and you feel
that it's all nice and secure join me
back at the sewing machine and I'll show
you how we do this top stitching or edge
stitching this edge we're going to be
using our zipper foot on the machine the
needle is in line with the edge of our
zipper foot and we're lining up the edge
of the zipper foot with the edge of our
fabric here so we are sewing about 1/8
three millimeters away from the edge of
this fold this will look really nice and
neat when you're finished and it will
obviously stop the lining and the right
side from coming over the zip let's
start by holding onto our threads
position the needle near
into the fabric and we will go backwards
and forwards we're just going to be
doing a normal stitch here with a six
lengths of 2.5 millimeters now you will
need to have your zip open to start with
and as we near the zipper pull we will
do the same position the needle into the
fabric lift up the foot and do up our
zip then we can continue all the way
down this edge and backwards and
forwards at the end I will let you do
this for your wash bag now we finished
our lovely top stitching on this side we
need to attach the fabric to the other
side of our zip now as before we've got
our lining right side facing up we've
measured in the end of the zip as we
discussed previously and we're going to
sit the top of the zipper tape along the
top edge of our lining here just like so
and obviously the zip is going to be
within our little markings now we're
going to take our fabric right side and
position that down on top to create a
sandwich and we're going to pin along
the top edge matching the zip the lining
and exterior fabric all up along this
edge I'm going to let you prepare this
side and then as before I would like you
to sew along this side next to the zip
as close to the zipper tape as possible
then you will need to turn it back over
like so and complete the top stitching
remember to add those pins in to make
sure that your fabric is nice and taut
though complete this and then I will
join you back here to start sewing the
bag together once a zip has
phone into the wash bag and you have top
stitch both sides of the zip we can now
sew the sides and the bottom of the wash
bag together take your two right sides
and they need to go over one side
together right sides facing each other
and your two lining pieces need to sit
here with the right sides together now
we're going to pin down one edge and you
want to sew both of these from the
lining towards the exterior fabric and
you want to pin the two awesome edges
matching and then all the way up this
side matching up the edge here as well
as the edges at the bottom when you get
to the point where the zip is you want
to make sure that they match on both
sides and you but I would push the seam
allowances towards the exterior fabric
we're going to sew this from this top
edge of our lining all the way down at
this point they must match the seam
allowances go towards the exterior
fabric all the way down to the bottom of
the wash bag you will complete this with
a half an inch seam allowance or if
you're using metric a one centimeter
seam allowance then we're going to do
exactly the same on the other side of
the wash bag however you still need to
sew this so we're going to turn it over
from the lining down to the exterior
fabric seam allowances going towards the
exterior fabric matching the points here
I would like you to complete that for
both of the side seams and then we can
talk about sewing the bottom of the bags
start sewing at the bottom edge the
lining we've gone back to a normal foot
and remember to put your needle back in
the central position we're sewing using
a standard stitch sense of 2.5
millimeters and we're using the seam
allowance of half an inch or one
centimetre taking the pins out as we go
start with the backwards and forwards
and sew all the way down the length
now that you've sewn up the two side
seams we're going to finish by sewing up
the bottom of the exterior fabric and
the bottom of the lining at this point
please check that your zip is open you
need your zip open so that you can turn
this around afterwards now I wish want
you to pin along the bottom edge of our
exterior fabric we're going to sew this
with the same half an inch or 1
centimeter seam allowance we also need
to do the same for the lining however at
the bottom of the line in here we need
to leave ourselves a gap so that we can
turn the bag all the way around so I
would recommend leaving a gap in the
middle it will look much neater in the
middle of it look at the edge so give
yourself a couple of pins and leave a
good-sized gap maybe between three and
four inches so say about 10 centimeters
enough for you to be able to turn this
around afterwards and if you have added
some wadding it can be quite bulky so
you're going to sew from the end to this
first pin backwards and forwards and
then from this pin to the end join me at
the Machine and we will sew this once
you've sewn across the bottom edge of
both the exterior fabric and lining you
can then make the decision as to whether
you wish to box the corners of your bag
now you don't have to do this we did
this for the medium and the large size
bag and it creates this sort of box
effect rather than going to a point at
the bottom edge so if you wish to do
this then follow these steps if you
don't then obviously you can get on and
turn your little bag around so if you
want to box the corners what do you need
to do well we need to and this is a
rather fiddly bit we need to make the
bottom seam come in line with this seam
here so you want to pull on both off the
sides pull them apart and you want to
open up this seam allowance and also the
bottom seam allowance and you do want to
try and sort of pin those together so
that they're almost one on top of each
other and then we are going to pin that
like said okay now what I want you to do
is measure down from the point here now
not the point of the seam allowances but
the point of the sewing so the bottom
corner of the bag we're going to measure
from that 3/4 of an inch which is
two centimetres and draw a line across
let me show you how to do that so now
we've pinned the little corners off and
we've drawn our line you can use a
removable panel chalk for this
three-quarters of an inch two
centimeters down from the sown and not
the seam allowance end so the corners of
my exterior fabric are ready to go here
both of them and then I've also got my
lining fabric ready to go too so let's
go to the sewing machine and I'll show
you how to sew these now we're going to
sew exactly on the drawn line that you
drew three quarters of an inch one
centimeter down from the tip of the
point the sewn point not the seam
allowances hold your threads to position
the needle into the fabric obviously we
will need to take the pins out and do
check that your seam allowances are open
on both sides here backwards and
forwards and you really want to sew
right off the edge here really so that
we don't have a little hole and then all
the way along the line that we drew
backwards and forwards again off the
edge on the other side and we're going
to complete that for all four corners to
exterior and to lining once you have
sewn all of the four corners trim your
threads and we're going to actually cut
off the corner here I want you to cut
them off about a quarter of an inch five
millimeters away from the line that you
stitched which is using a pair of
scissors and complete this for all four
of them obviously if you've used a pen
that needs to come off with water like I
have had I've done here you will need to
remove that now now you need to turn the
whole of the bag around which is why we
left the zip open in the previous sewing
stage get your cut your fingers right
into the corners to really poke out all
of the corners
once you've turned your wash bag to the
right side
the final thing you need to do is to
finish the little hole that we left in
the lining now you'll need to turn under
the raw edges of this of the lining and
positions of pins in about 183
millimeters away from the edge and just
positions across so that it looks neat
and we're literally just going to edge
stitch along this to seal this little
hole up and to finish the wash bag that
you have created soap in the hole in
your lining and joy MIT machine to
finish doing this to finish the hole in
the lining I'm going to be stitching 1/8
3mm meters away from the two folded
edges here start with the needle down go
backwards and forwards a couple of
stitches and sew 1/8 away I'm using a
guide on my foot to make sure that I'm
accurately sewing the 1/8 away here take
the pins out as you go make sure that
the two layers sit nicely on top of each
other continue sewing past the hole or
the end of the hole go back with them
forwards to see all your stitching lift
up our needle and there we have it
and there you have it your wonderful
wash bag all makeup bags with or without
quilting and with or without the little
boxed ends I really hope you've enjoyed
