Create a Vector Watermelon Logo Mark – Illustrator Tutorial Video Lecture | Adobe Illustrator: Become a Pro at Designing - Design Softwares

hey everybody welcome into this adobe
illustrator tutorial brought to you as
always by cutted dot-com you saw the
title we're creating this sort of
watermelon vector artwork and it is
inspired straight up by this pretty
amazing artist over on dribble I believe
they go by the name MBE I'm going to
have a link down to their stuff in the
description absolute must see stuff
super super talented designer and we're
taking pieces or artwork we're going to
cover how to create it in Adobe
Illustrator if you want to support this
channel this video whatever hit the
little like button make sure you

Photoshop course so I'm selling all
about how to retouch images if you're

further ado let's get into this video
tutorial alright here's our finished
effect here in Adobe Illustrator this is
a copy of the watermelon artwork that I
created and this is what we're going to
create something similar to this at
least it all begins by going file new
and we're going to create a new document
that's the size right there 2560 by 1440
you got it go ahead and hit create now
first things first I'm going to come
over here and just select this little
flyout menu at the top right corner of
my layers panel and choose panel options
and because my screen is large I'm going
to set my thumbnail size to like 80
pixels I want something huge there we go
look at that nice and easy to see I'm
just going to double click on appearance
to collapse my appearance panel and
everything else can stay open because
we'll probably use some of these as we
work our way through this video now
let's come over here and choose our
rectangle tool and just click one single
time and set the width of our rectangle
to 25 60 and the height to 14 4 to go
ahead and hit OK there it is great grab
the move tool located right up here at
the top of the tool bar the selection
tool as illustrator calls it and we're
going to align this to the horizontal
and vertical centers now from this
little alignment drop-down I'm choosing
the line to artboard that's very
important you want to make sure you have
a line to artboard selected and now that
we've done that we can come over here to
our our fill and Stroke swatches and
fact let me just double up my toolbar
here to make those a little bit bigger
for you we're going to select the stroke
and I'm just going to hit this little
cross icon here to get rid of the stroke
we don't want to stroke and for the
Phil I'm going to double click on the
fill and I am going to give it the color
15:09 to three and that scheme should be
a very very dark blue color so I'm gonna
hit OK and one of the things I'm going
to do is I'm going to drag the stroke
herb the stroke the fill from right here
and drop it over here on my swatches
panel therefore saving that as a swatch
nice and easy right now what we can do
is just double click and were going to
name this layer BG for background and
I'm going to go ahead and lock this
layer now we're going to create a brand
new layer we're going to call this layer
watermelon there we go great it's pretty
self-explanatory let's go back and grab
the ellipse tool now and just click one
single time and I want the width and
height of this ellipse to be 550 so I'm
going to say 550 pixels for width and I
hit OK there it is right there in the
middle I'm going to align this the
horizontal and vertical centers of my
document here just so it's you know
exactly centered and we're going to
change the fill of this by double
clicking on our fills a swatch over
there we're going to change the fill of
this to 4 for c61 4 I believe is the
green yeah look at that nice bright
green go ahead ok and once more here to
drag this swatch green and just indoor
swatches panel save that as a swatch
some of these colors we're going to need
later on some we might not but we're
going to save them as a swatch here as
we move along to keep things kind of
rolling alright so once more we're going
to grab our selection arrow up here and
I'm going to go object path offset path
right you see that they're offset path
we're going to select offset path and
we're going to offset this path by
negative 20 pixels look at that it's
like I just pre ran this tutorial before
I started recording or something but
also the path negative 20 pixels what
that's going to do if I preview this is
it's going to shrink the size of the
path inward this is going to be
important so we can sort of create the
rind of our watermelon of course we
still need the outer bit of our
watermelon but part of the beauty of
offset path is that if we hit this
little arrow right that little arrow
right there we open up our layer also
that path has created a second shape for
us so we still have our original shape
and now we have this next shape which if
I look at my reference image we're going
to give it this sort of beige yellow
color because that's sort of you know
not quite
watermelon flesh but not the green of
the rind either it's kind of that nasty
disappointing area in between not pretty
to look at but tastes horriffic ly
disgusting as well so I'm going to go
ahead and just select this and we're
going to fill this I'm going to double
click on the swatch here we're going to
fill this with the color
ff6 CC and that's going to be this very
very light beige yellow color hit okay
great looks good we'll drag the sucker
over and save it as a swatch just so we
can join the club by the way you can set
the new swatch a button but you got to
go through this you know song and dance
here so I don't always like to do that
but there we go we have that as a swatch
in our swatches panel as well we got our
first two circles green for the outer
rind that yellowish color for that inner
part of the rind and we now need to
create the sort of red flesh of the
watermelon so select the yellow rind and
we're going to go object once more path
you got it offset path we're gonna go
negative 20 pixels again hit okay no
need to preview I know what we're doing
here and we just have that inner circle
selected right and we're going to change
the color of this so we'll double click
on our fill then the color we're looking
to set it to here is FF 2 4 4 9 and
that's sort of this red but definitely
heading in the direction of pink type
color go ahead and hit OK and we've got
sort of our three rings of watermelon
let's drag this swatch over and the
swatches panel save that one that one
we're definitely going to use in a
little bit now what we want to do is
select the green ellipse the outermost
circle and hit command or ctrl C and
then up here under edit we're going to
choose paste in front now I really do
want this to be all the way in front but
when I paste it in front you're going to
see it's just going to paste it in front
of that layer the hotkey to just bump
something all the way to the front is
command shift or control shift and the
right square bracket key if that's too
much to think about in one shot you can
go object arrange bring to front so
there's a hotkey command shift and that
right square bracket key all right so we
have this up in front now this is kind
of important here we want to zoom in on
this so I just grabbed my magnifying
glass tool we're going to zoom in here
and we can see we have an anchor point
on the top right that anchor point right
there and we also have an anchor point
down here on the bottom what we want to
do is take our scissors tool maybe
located beneath your eraser tool right
so just go grab that scissors tool and
we're just going to click right there
see it says anchor and by the way if you
don't see that popping up you can go
view and turn your smart guides on that
can be really helpful for something like
this and just click right on the anchor
boom it may not look like we've done
anything but we've split the anchor and
we're gonna do the same thing for the
anchor on top and look at what happened
here in our layers panel we now have two
halves of a green circle it's exactly
what we need very very important step
here now what we want to do is select
each half of the green circle so I'll go
with the right side
I'm going to hit command or control J
that's just going to join the open end
of our path I'm going to select the
other side of the path and a commander
control J and it just creates the path
going back down the middle remember we
split the path so the anchor points on
the top and bottom it's just kind of
this half semicircle path and there's
nothing joining them so we just created
the the paths for both shapes to join
them so now I've got this shape here
I've got this shape here two halves of a
green circle I'm going to just make sure
those are mashed together alright we're
going to shut off the top I'm sorry
that's the wrong one we want to shut off
the right hand green circle so it's that
guy we're going to work here on the left
side just like we have in our original
artwork to create sort of the outer skin
of the watermelon and then we're going
to kind of you know move on and do some
cool things from there so let's select
the left side of the circle here we're
going to go to our gradient panel and
just apply a black to white gradient
right off the bat and I'm going to set
the angle of the gradient to 90 degrees
alright now we know what we're working
with here so what we need to do I'm just
going to drag my white slider way over
we're going to drag that green swatch
from the swatches panel right down to
the gradient stripe all right
you can see there we go make sure our
gradient is set to 90 degrees and once I
have one version of this we can drag and
get rid of that color handle we want to
replace the black color handle as well
so I'm going to drag my green stop down
I can drop it right on top of that black
color handle and it's going to replace
it now we're going to select the color
handle here off to the to the left this
is the bottom of the gradient a bit down
here I'm going to make sure I select
that color handle and up here in my
color a panel I am going to from the
well from the top left fly out then your
the top right flat menu I'm sorry I'm
going to choose HSB hue saturation
brightness and I'm just going to reduce
the brightness by by 20% so I'm just
going to take this to 57% straight up
you can see we're just a little darker
on the bottom than we are on the top and
I'll probably even take my center
divider and just squish down that
darkness a little bit or maybe even pull
the darkness up a little and then
control it with that point so you can
see I pulled the darkness up to about
20% on the location slider and the top
is at about I don't know let's put it at
like 30% or so just just for the sake of
Conformity making it a little easier for
you guys following so we just pulled it
up to add a little bit of darker green
deeper green to the bottom part of the
left of our watermelon now before we go
any further I want to specifically now
make sure we select this dark green
slider I probably should have done this
before I got out of my little color
and just drag the swatch here and save
that as a swatch so we drag that into
the swatches panel we can see it just
appeared right there alright so we have
our light green or beige yellow color or
pink red flesh and our dark green all
coming into our swatches panel great and
next up what we need to do is create a
long thin rectangle so let's grab a
rectangle tool we'll just click once I'm
going to give this like a thousand
pixels of width and maybe like 20 or 20
let's go 25 pixels of Heights go ahead
and hit OK you can see a nice long thin
rectangle just like so and we're going
to fill this with our just our dark
green that we just created or our darker
green I should say next we're going to
go effect distort and transform and
choose zig zag now from the zig zag
panel I'm going to turn preview on so we
can see what's going on number one we
want to set the points to smooth because
we want this to be a nice smooth zig zag
I'm going to set the size to about 12
pixels to make it a little bit bigger
and ridges per second I think I'm gonna
bump it up to about 10 you can see it's
going to us this nice wavy effect and by
the way when you have an odd number of
ridges you can see it gives you sort of
this funky effect we don't want that we
definitely want something that's more
like a nice wavy line go ahead and hit
OK and we're going to grab our selection
tool once more hold down your Shift key
hover around one of the outside corners
of the shape and then just drag to kind
of click the shape you know click click
and get it upright like this and then
we're going to just hold down our alt or
option key and duplicate out one two
more versions of this so I was holding
in my alt or option key and dragging and
then holding down shift to keep it in a
perfectly straight line I'm going to
move this one a little bit closer to the
edge use my arrow keys to nudge it right
where I want it and I'm going to select
all three of these and using my
alignment options up here at the top of
my screen actually the spacing options
I'm going to choose this horizontal
distribute Center option well and you
can see what just happened there what
happened is that they distributed across
my artboard why did that happen because
align to artboard was still selected we
want to now use a line to selection and
then use horizontal distribute Center
and you can see it's going to Center and
just make sure they're all perfectly
lined up and spaced there on that left
side of the watermelon we're going to
group these guys up by justing commander
control G and we're now going to copy
the the underlying watermelon half so
just that semicircle you can see in the
layers panel I have selected that path
we're going to copy it commander control
C and I'm going to select that layer
group we're going to go to the
transparency panel we're going
double-click on this little thumbnail to
create a layer mask and we're going to
hit command or control F to paste our
our little semicircle back in place and
we're just going to fill this with white
so I'm just gonna hit this little white
swatch up here right there you see that
boom fill it with white great now we're
going to select our original thumbnail
here in the transparency panel so we can
go back to editing our actual layer
artwork and we're just going to reduce
the opacity of this layer group to like
20% we're going to knock it down quite a
bit we want this to be a fairly fairly
subtle effect and you can see that dark
green at the bottom it just looks like
the color where these squiggly lines are
just kind of fading right out of that
darker line in fact that I'm looking at
we might make it just a little bit
brighter maybe let's take it up to 30%
something like that it looks pretty cool
next what we want to do is create that
little highlight that's over here on the
watermelon this little highlight here
this is actually not too difficult to do
but it's a little tricky
what we want to do is select the the
beige circle because right around that
circle area is about where that
highlight is right we're going to select
the beige circle and copy it commander
ctrl C and then command or ctrl F to
paste it in front and then of course we
need to go object arrange bring to front
to bring it all the way to the real deal
front now we want to do is hit this
little double arrow icon in the tool bar
it's going to just swap the fill and
make that by stroke and you can see here
we just have this nice little tiny
stroke happening we're going to come
over here to the area where the
highlights going to be and once again
grab our scissors tool and I'm going to
take the scissor tool and I'm going to
snip on the anchor there and then maybe
also like the path right there and then
I'm going to up the path a little bit
maybe two like there and I'm just going
to take a very small portion of the path
all right so it doesn't look like I've
done much of anything in fact it
probably looks like I've done nothing
what I'm going to do is just select the
remainder of the path and you can see
like the path it's only selected up into
the point where we skipped it right on
both sides so I can select that and just
delete it now we're left with that now I
need to select the bit in between right
you can see here that little section of
the path in between is all that selected
I can delete that and we're left with
these two little chunks of path I'm
going to select the path we'll down
shift select the other piece of path we
want to set our stroke color to just
solid white so we're going to go back to
our color a panel up here just select
that white thumbnail or that white color
swatch I should say we're going to go to
our stroke panel and we're going to set
this stroke we're going to give it a
weight of like 20 points or to make it
huge but you can see it still looks a
little funky right because it's got
those straight edges well the trick is
use the round joint corner option in the
stroke panel and it's going to round our
strokes right out or I'm sorry
all that song and dance about the round
joint the round cap we don't have any
corners here the round joint would be
for you know your outside corners these
are just end caps of the path so of
course the cap is what we want and not
the actual corner joint right now it's
not quite in the correct position so
we'll just use our arrow keys we have
our selection tool selected get the both
those a little bit selected use a down
arrow key a couple times maybe the right
arrow key just a couple times to nudge
it exactly where we want it and just
like that we have our little double
highlight right and the cool thing about
this is if you decide it's it's well
it's too big let's say you could select
both pieces and you could say you know
maybe I only need like 17 points on my
highlight or maybe that looks good maybe
this highlight is a little bit too long
so we can take the scissor tool we could
trim it down so you can just snip the
path there take your selection tool
select that little extra piece of the
path delete it and you're going to
shorten the highlight so you can just go
in and tweak and adjust your highlight
until it looks just right next what we
want to do is go ahead and create the
little seeds that are going to go on the
right side of the watermelon in the
flesh we're going to do that by grabbing
the ellipse tool and we're going to give
the ellipse tool white fills we're just
going to swap the fill and Stroke we
don't need a stroke on these I'm going
to click once and I'm going to set the
width and height to 20 pixels in both
directions said okay you're going to see
it's a little tiny shape here alright
next we're going to grab our direct
selection tool and I'm going to select
just the anchor point on the bottom and
just to hold down my shift key and hit
the down arrow key one time it's going
to give me sort of what starts to look
like a seed shape I could leave it at
this shape I could make it very pointy
if I wanted by grabbing the pen tools
can anchor point to order the convert
anchor tool and just select the anchor
and click once you can say that makes it
more like a very sharp shape I kind of
like the almost guitar pick shape I
think that's kind of cool and what we're
going to do with this is I'm going to
zoom out we're going to rotate this guy
I have the selection tool now I'm going
to hold down shift and I'm going to
rotate one two and that's going to
rotate this seed completely on its side
and I'm going to move it over and align
it with the very center of my watermelon
a smart guide helps me with that but if
you don't have smart guides turned on
you can come up here and choose align to
artboard and align it to the vertical
centers you can see it didn't move
because it's already aligned to the
vertical Center
I'm going to zoom in on this guy and
what we're going to do is we're going to
begin the process of duplicating this so
we needed duplicated a bunch of times
and get sort of exact rotations on it
we're going to do this using the
transform tool so we're going to go
affect the sort and transform transform
so we're going to transform this effect
by 60% we're going to get 60% smaller
that is I'm going to turn preview on you
can see how it's saying whoa you're
making the shape 60% small and you're
sure you want to do this yes I do in
fact what we're going to do is set this
to make one copy when I do this you're
going to see it's going to bring the
other shape back and we can't see what
we just did because there's a now a
second copy of this little guitar pick
shape but because both shapes are white
you don't see it right so we need to
move this horizontally and vertically
I'm going to move this negative 10 on
the horizontal scale and I think like
negative 50 on the vertical scale yeah
something like that so now we have a
smaller seed right now all we need to do
is change the angle I think I miss if
it's like 45 degrees yep looks perfect
great hit OK alright we've got a first
seed what we want to do is go object
expand appearance now we have two shapes
right but they are grouped up see this
is a layer group we want to ungroup this
object ungroup and now we have two
single white seeds for our watermelon we
want to do the same thing for the bottom
select that shape effect we can just go
right to transform and all we need to
change here is we want to change our
vertical to plus 50 right we want to
move it downward let's turn preview on
and we need to change angle to negative
oops negative 45 see that nice and easy
horizontal and vertical scaling that all
stays the same moving that pretty much
stays the same except vertical is going
in the other direction go ahead and hit
OK and once more object expand
appearance and an object ungroup next we
want to create sort of the second row of
seeds right these seeds out here and
we're going to do that by selecting the
topmost seed here and we're going to
affect transforms we're going to do much
of the same we really don't need to
change the scaling right because the 60%
is where we want it to be so let's just
set this to 100 and vertical also 100
the moving let's just zero these out at
0 and then angle we're going to zero
that off as well so we want to move this
out this way so that's going to be plus
on the horizontal so let's go like plus
20
let's go plus 20 there we go and on the
vertical I think I'm going to go
negative 40 so we're going to push it up
and over just like that I don't think
the angle here has to change
at all and we're just going to make that
one single copy go ahead and hit okay
and once more object expand appearance
and an object ungroup now because we
have one of our seeds out sort of on the
second rotational axis or whatever you
want to call it we're going to duplicate
slash transform this seed so we're going
to select that we're going to go effect
transform and once more we'll leave the
horizontal and vertical scaling where it
is we're going to own the turn preview
on here because what we need to do is
set vertical to like plus fifty
something like that probably is going to
work for us and plus 20 on the
horizontal looks good and then what I
want to do here is I need to rotate the
seed a little bit so I'm going to go
negative twenty two point five for my
rotation and hit OK and of course object
expand appearance object ungroup
actually no we don't want to group yet
I'm sorry we want to maintain that group
because we're actually going to
transform that groups we're going to go
add effect transform we're going to make
a copy of this entire group now and what
we want to do is leave horizontal and
vertical at 100% as we've been doing
we're going to set horizontal to zero we
really don't want to move it side to
side at all vertical we want to go 130
pixels downwards that's moving downward
wonders and 30 pixels angle we're going
to set that to zero and we're just going
to choose this option right here reflect
Y so it's going to flip those seeds over
and place them just they need to go go
ahead okay and now here we'll go object
expand appearance and then of course
object ungroup so we have all of our
seeds created they're all placed exactly
where we want them to go now what we're
going to do is begin coloring them so I
know I want probably two white seeds
I want like two red seeds something like
select let's ungroup this object ungroup
the answer we need to do a double
ungroup here because they're the small
groups are or groups in and of
themselves we're going to select like
this seed and hold down shift and select
this seed and I'm going to fill this
with a color so I'm gonna double click
my fill to open up my color picker and
I'm going to choose the color c400
to e and that's going to kind of be it's
like a little bit more saturated a
little darker pink then the pink of the
watermelon slash we're going to set like
this one this one and this one we're
going to make these a background color
so I can just select them and choose the
background color swatch that we have in
fact I'm going to make my color swatches
a little bit bigger here
let's go large thumbnail so we can see
these thumbnails a little bit better
there
my background color I'm going to set
those to that so there we immediately we
just have some nice seeds and I think
that looks pretty good just three of the
dark blue two of the pink two of the
white I like the way that looks so now
we need to create sort of the shadow
effect that this half of the watermelon
will be casting on the split open side
of the watermelon if you recall we we
had that second half of a circle right
down here that we shut off remember we
turn it on we cover up all that stuff we
just did well I'm going to select that
we're going to drag this up to the top
in fact I can use that trick object
arrange object arrange bring to front
there we go
covering everything up now just like I
want it because this is going to be our
shadow we're going to fill this with a
gradient so select the gradient panel
and just give it the black to way
creating right off the bat that's
perfect
and we want to open up our swatches
panel once more because I can collapse
my color panel here I want to fill this
gradient with the color of the
watermelon flesh so I can grab the
watermelon flesh drop it on that color
stop grab the watermelon flesh drop it
on that color stop all right great
so this color stop here on to the left
is the color over here this color stop
on the right is the color to the right
I'm going to select the color stop to
the right and I'm going to set the
opacity to 0% make it completely go away
then I'm going to change the location of
that color stop to something like let's
try like 45% yeah that's probably good I
just want a little bit of a shadowy
effect and right now it doesn't look too
much like a shadowy effect we're going
to go transparency and we're going to
set the blend mode here to overlay you
can see almost immediately that gives us
a really rich shadowy affective the
problem is it's really primarily
affecting the pink reddish flesh of the
watermelon and not the rind so we want
to select this gradient shape and go
command or ctrl C command or ctrl F to
paste it in front now it's affecting
everything too much we're going to take
it a step further by choosing to change
the blend mode and set the blend mode to
multiply and then we're going to set the
overall opacity to like 35% you can see
that's just giving us some nice
shadowing there on the rind as well next
up I'm going to zoom out just one click
here next step what we want to do grab
our ellipse tool and with this same like
kind of reddish to transparent gradient
let's hold down our Shift key and just
create a few small circles kind of on
both sides of the watermelon right so
I'll go with like two circles like that
let's create a third circle here and I'm
going to change the color to the actual
just solid a pink color then go
solid pink color over there and I'm
going to add another circle up here and
this one I'm going to go with the bright
green color I'm going to put two like
bright green colors over here and then
I'm going to go up here and I'm just
going to choose like a light blue and
this is just one of the default colors
in Adobe Illustrator I'll go with that
light blue let's add a little light blue
drop over there I'm going to add another
circle here this one I'm going to make
just white so I'm going to put a little
white swatch up here and I probably
should add a white swatch over here just
just because we're equal-opportunity
offenders and then a real little tiny
white swatch over there so we gotta have
all this like splattery look and stuff
and you can of course select and just
arrange it however you think it needs to
go once once everything's been created I
kind of like to try to organize it in
some type of way that it roughly looks
like it's sort of some kind of digital
splatter out away from the watermelon it
kind of looks cool but you know do do
with it as you think as you see fit so
as they say so you can see there we've
created that and it looks a little bit
too little too symmetrical for my taste
but you can go ahead you can play with
it all you want I think the last thing
we're going to do before we wrap this up
this still looks way too tall isn't it
just take that over there there we go
something like that you can play around
with it till the cows come home alright
the last thing we're going to do here
I'm not going to get distracted by that
any longer is we are going to I'm going
to start collapsing some of these panels
to get them out of the way I'm going to
scroll all the way down to the bottom
I'm going to select my base green
ellipse right this is just above the
background and we want to add an outer
glow to this ellipse by going effect
stylize outer glow
now this outer glow I kind of have the
settings already set here for me I'm
just going to tick on preview it's going
to take a second to render because it's
a 100 pixel blurred outer glow a mode of
screen is great you could go with normal
as well either is going to work we want
our opacity to be at about 20% it's a
very very subtle effect blur of 100
pixels works great that's with a shape
that's 550 pixels by 550 pixels if
you're creating a shape of a different
size maybe the blur needs to be a little
bigger or smaller and you want to select
the color swatch and a color we're using
is f00 9e so it's a very sort of hot
pink color I'm going to hit OK it's
going to re-render once more then I'm
going to hit OK and we have a nice
little outer glow around our watermelon
graphic and I'm going to just tab away
my my panels make that full screen and
you can see
we have gone ahead and created this
watermelon really got to give huge shout
out to the designer their link is down
