hi in this episode of The Beginner's
Guide i'll talk about saving as ex GF
which is the native file type for gimp
as you already know saving as jpg and
other file types is being moved to the
export options and this save and save as
options only work for saving in X CSF
file type and archives now you see this
little project here I open this image
with this board then added some text a
white shadow here this distance sound
added from one of the filters some more
text over here with some effects and you
see that all this in layers and saving
as this X CSF file type will allow me to
save all this information even if I make
a selection and leave that selection
active if I save the project and then
open it again later you see that the
selection will still be there so this X
CSF file type allows you to save all
that information layer layer masks
selections and a lot more now I already
saved this project once and this means
if I use the save option if I do some
additional editing here let's say grab
the brush tool do something like this
just for the example click on the save
option and this will overwrite the
already existing file but if I start
something new let's say that I started
this just now what I'm going to create
something new here really quickly
and now if I use the save option you see
that I have the ability to choose where
to save it name it and choose the xes
save file type or one of the archives
but once I save this and then do
additional editing and use the save
option this will overwrite the already
existing file so i don't recommend you
using this save option at all especially
if you are beginner and the reason for
that is this save as option which allows
you to say the project under a different
name even if you are saving the project
for the first time this option will work
and the reason I recommend using the
save as option and not the save option
is like I said because the save option
will overwrite your project and a lot of
times when we have big projects that we
are going to work on for hours we want
to save our projects in steps let's say
I do some editing here this board are
add some text and then I save this as
board one then I continue editing add
additional text or something else save
it as birth to and if later I noticed a
mistake somewhere that I can correct I
can go back check the files and see
where that mistake was made and I can
continue from there and not lose my
entire project and start all over again
so this is why it's a good idea to use
this save as option and save the
progress of your project has different
files now let's go and select the save
as option one more time and click on
this select file type and you see here
we can choose to save this xef image
which is the ex GF file type native for
gimp or we can also choose one of these
archives here and notice here that I
wrote some numbers on the image
the first one is the size of the file
when I saved it in xef file type and you
see it's 29.5 megabytes the second time
I saved it with this busy archive and
you see how much this reduced the size
of the file and next time I save it with
this G zip archive and you see the size
of the file so by using these archives
you can save a lot of space on a hard
