hi in this video I will give you some
tips on how to create your YouTube
channel art and more important how to
add guides so you know where the safe
area is and the safe area is what will
always be visible on different devices
mobile devices desktops and TVs and you
can learn more about this if you go to
youtube.com slash one channel so if you
are interested in this pause the video
and write these numbers down first we
have the overall size of the image in
pixels then we have the total size which
is this here then we have the safe area
always visible this over here and then
we have the flexible area may be visible
depending on the device and that's these
two areas so when you start creating
your channel art go to file new and for
the width type in 2560 pixels and for
the height 1440 pixels and this will be
the overall size of the image then click
OK and now here you can start adding
digital photographs for example by using
the file open as layers option or you
can just drag and drop images in GIMP
you can create graphics using the tools
you can add text you can do whatever you
want but before that it's a good idea to
add these guides so you know where the
safe area is and you know how to
position your graphics in the way that
they can be visible on all devices I'm
going to delete the text and also go to
image guides remove all guides now we
can calculate where the guides need to
be but I'll show you an easier way using
a simple trick we won't need to
calculate anything
I'll start by creating a new layer click
OK then I'll grab the rectangle select
tool then I'll go to view and select
this option snap to canvass edges
how quick and drag and then I'll move
the selection to snap onto the canvas
edge but then I'll type the total size
numbers over here for the width 25 60
and for the height 4 2 3 then I'll click
here to apply the selection and next
I'll go to edit fill with foreground
color go to the Select menu and choose
num next go to layer Auto crop layer
then choose the alignment tool click on
the background hold down the shift key
and click on this black rectangle then
choose this option next right click on
the layer with the rectangle and choose
alpha to selection and then go to image
guides new guides from selection and
then we can go ahead and select num and
we can even delete this layer now we
don't need it anymore
and you see we have our first guides
next let's create the safe area guides
again start with creating new layer then
grab the rectangle select tool click and
drag then I'll type in the numbers for
the safe area 15:46
by 4 to 3 click to apply the selection
go to edit fill with foreground color
select now layer Auto crop layer on line
1 to click on the background hold down
the shift key and click on the rectangle
then use these two options next right
click on the layer alpha to selection
image menu guides new guide from
selection we can delete the layer and go
to select none and now all the guides
are in position you know where the safe
area
and you can start creating your channel

open-source photo editing software you
can also use it to create images and
