C++ Allegro 5 Made Easy Tutorial 18 - Sound Video Lecture | Allegro: A Complete Guide - Game Development

hello everybody and welcome to your 18th
Allegro 5 tutorial in this tutorial
we're going to be learning on how to
play sounds in our program so this one's
going to be utilizing sound effects and
the next one's gonna be teaching us how
to play like background music etc etc a
lot of people when they hear about
sounds they think this is one of the
least important tutorial so sometimes
they skip it but sounds are just as
important as every other thing that we
any other aspect of a game it probably
in most it isn't the most important
aspect um well if it's a game a guitar
hero then probably is but in most games
they aren't the most important aspect
but they do have an effect on the game
especially if you're making an RPG um
the music kind of like sets the mood etc
etc but anyways enough of me talking
let's get right into the tutorial so we
want to do is that we want to we need to
include two things we need to include
Allegro audio and we need to include the
the codec the a codec and what the codec
does is that it just allows us to load
in sounds of different types right and
play sounds of different file types so
once we do that we need to do two things
we need to install the audio and we need
to initialize the codec so we do a LAN
it a codec add-on okay so we've done
that now just like images or bitmaps and
we have certain identifiers and variable
types the type for a sound in Allegro 5
is Allegro underscore sample and for a
level 4 users are there was a difference
between media and samples and this one
local 5 everything is a sample I never
really checked if there is an
I'm Allegro MIDI but you can handle
songs and stuff using samples and
Allegra five so we're gonna do is that
we're going to we're going to name it so
we can put our pointer to the name and
as you know when we when we put a point
into something we need to destroy it
so if we scroll to the bottom what we're
gonna do is you're just gonna say I'll
destroy sample and we put the sample
name so sound effect okay so if we get
back to our code our to loading anything
I will just do a load sample and we load
and then sample name we're trying to
load in so most likely for sound effects
you're gonna use something like a WAV
file or something like that
the reason being is that WAV files are
normally uncompressed but whatever the
but like if you're using like a
background music or something like that
it most like you're not gonna use a WAV
file you're gonna want to use a
compressed file format but if using
sound form like sound effects maybe you
want it to be extremely detailed so
you'd probably use something like a WAV
file or etc so okay so we load in our
we've got our sample loaded in so after
we've loaded in our samples and
everything anywhere after or whatever
what you want to do is you want to do
ale reserve samples and you wanna go
reserving samples this is basically
letting the default mixer or whatever
make sure you're using that in the mixer
know how many samples you're gonna be
using right this is an important step
because if it doesn't know how many
samples is using then you could run into
some problems in your program so in this
case we're using one sample so we
reserved one sample okay so now we got
everything set we've loaded our sample
or we reserved the sample so now it's
just a matter of playing the sample okay
so what we're gonna do is that I will
just okay I'll just put the sound effect
for one
buttinsky so when they press it down
keys gonna play the sound effect so what
we do is a let grow I mean we do a LAN
the score plays sample now it takes a
lot of things than parameters so the
first thing it takes is the sample name
so sound effect I put it in there the
second one is the gain the gain
represents the volume or the one point
zero represents the default volume so
the regular volume anything lower will
make the sound softer anything higher
will make the sound louder but if you
make it louder or something could
distort the sound so if you just want to
louder sound and make it loud from
default or whatever pan uh zero panning
means like if you wanted to pan towards
right speaker or the last speaker so if
you wanted to sound effects to more
leaned towards the right speaker then
you will put the value more towards one
point zero and if you want to think
towards the last speaker you put in
there negative one point zero and two
for this sum the sound to play equally
to both speakers you just set the pan to
zero zero point zero since the float
type the speed is at the speed that it
plays at so for the normal speed at one
point zero if you want to play faster
you put a higher value if you want to
play at a half speed you put lower about
you so for the leg role play mode
there's three different the three
different play modes there's like a loop
there's play once and there's once and
there's by something else in this case
we're since a sound effect but not we
don't want to really repeat it we only
want to play it once also we do a let go
play mode once and for this would set
the ID to zero so and as for putting
your your samples on end or your sound
effects you have to put in your project
folder so for those of you if you guys
haven't watched the sprites tutorial or
anything if you're using Visual Studio
what you do is you'll go to the project
folder then double click the folder the
game file name again or the folder name
again and you put your sound effect or
whatever in there and then if your if
your sound effects in another folder in
there like sound / sound effect like if
you have another folder
like sound and you put it your sound
effect in there that when you loaded in
you have to load it in from sound /
sound effect etc etc okay for you users
are using like say dev C++ or coal
blocks whatever in the initial project
folder where all the header files and
the implementation like the CPP files
and all the um where all those files are
you just have to place it in that folder
so once we got all those sound effects
and there what we're gonna do is we're
gonna run our program and the same
program from last tutorial first down
okay so that is it for this tutorial as
for the sound formats that supports the
known ones I know are the wave and our
quarrels I'm not sure about mp3 or other
type of file format type so you can
research that if you would like but it's
