there's an old saying in my family and
it goes like this
winners rout their cords on the e-string
but champions rout their cords on the
a-string so today we're going to learn
over a hundred different chords routed
on the a string through nine voicings
separated between major and minor
classes you can substitute them for any
chord you want we're going to start
right here then on the fifth fret of the
a string this is ad note so for all
these voicings right now are going to be
d something and we're going to start
right here so this is going to be ad
major voicing it's kind of like a double
bar chord so I'm holding down the fifth
fret on the a string I'm holding down
the seventh fret on the D G and B
strings and you can just get away with
playing those four strings on the inside
now if you want to be like a true master
you can get that high a pan-asian but
that's not even essential a lot of
people play this chord like this
I don't know why you would do that I
feel like this is a lot easier any on
with all these chords I if some of these
are too difficult this is kind of a
tough one actually some are so difficult
just get a piece of it so if you can't
play this just don't revenge it and
think of the root as being here which I
don't have to play the root note they
get a hold D major for it so D major now
the regular voicing for you which is
this little variety
now all of these are going to be movable
shape chords and what that means is you
can just take it move it up and down the
fretboard and whatever note this is the
major chord will follow so D major d
sharp e flat major major major anyways
so there's one D major now let's make aa
one minor variation you can make a D
major seven chord so a real quick
background on this is just the major
scale the major scale is responsible for
all this stuff so please learn the major
scale one two three four five six seven
that's what we're gonna add to this
board so now I have my index finger on
the fifth fret of the a string it's like
a power 4 right here ring finger seven
my middle finger is the altered note
here and my pinkies are gonna still sit
down now I can keep this high in I can
just get the middle four string
anyway D major seven really awesome for
now we're going to do one more thing
we're gonna take away this wetness here
to here this makes a d7 chord d7 short
for D dominant seven so we have D major
D major seven D seven now the way you
make a d7 chord you flatten the majors
of one two three four five six seven
when man I will give you a d7 chord so
the difference.we major seven two sevens
I should pretty important and we're
going to go over that with the next two
chords we're gonna do a D major nine
chord so now I've swish my finger is
holding the root note down now instead
of my index finger that's my middle
finger I'm gonna have a major third year
one two three
so I'm gonna this piece here and now I'm
gonna add in my pinkie to the sixth fret
of the g string and my ring finger is on
this Ino which is five on the B string
so again this is just the middle four
string D major nine now just like the
difference between D major 7 and D seven
the same thing pretty much applies to D
major 9 and d9 all I need to do is take
this 7,000 flat so it does make sense to
do this I'm gonna switch these two
fingers here
I'm gonna give this so I've got five
four five five so we've got D major D
major seven D seven D major nine and
denominate
which is kind of dominant all these can
be substituted for major chords to
varying degrees of success
now the opposite of that would be a
minor chord we're going to keep it in
the same spot just moved around this is
going to be ad minor voicing really
really common shape it starts the same
way the major chord does except that
note is altered it's a flat three so we
have five a 77 G and then six made right
here again you can still get the fifth
fret on the high E string if you want to
yo need your move just get the Mozilla
for gone so D minor
now to make a D minor 7 all you have to
do is pop your thank you
minor minor 7
okay another really awesome one that I'm
a big fan of is a minor 9 chord now
we're gonna change our root note from
our index finger to our middle finger
and as you think of the d9 that we did
with the major class chord and then just
flatten the 3rd which is again the
difference between major and minor is a
flat third so thank your next finger
bakit one fret back so now we have 5 3 5
5 minor 9 chords really really cool to
kind of have a different flavor here
from playing and the fourth voicing
we're going to do that we're going to
call a minor voicing it's that tight
let's mark with diminished thing is a
minor 7 flat 5 chord no screws on the
7th note of a scale that makes sense she
great if not don't worry about it all it
is is index finger on the D now we're
going to go 5 to 6 5 again and 6 again
minor seven flat five it's kind of a
long name for a board but the cool thing
is it's telling you exactly what's in
there so minor seven chord which there's
the five my ring finger I'm going to
flatten that and a more comfortable hand
shape like this there it is
minor seven flat five shows a D minor 7
5 5 g sharp E flat minor 7 a minor 7
flat you just move all these around now
why this is important is because you can
take really bland chord progressions
substitute some of them in and out and
make them just a little bit different so
it doesn't sound like everything else in
the world example we'll do let's do a 4
progression like a like D major to e
minor to G major to C so instead of all
chords D D minor
gee to see
let's trade some of them out so instead
of story with da serve with the D major
7 and the E minor let's change that to E
minor 9 so d instead of that regular old
G let's go all the way find the G on the
a string which is 10th fret and it'll
make the dominant 7 chord
and then we'll go back to the C but
we'll use one of the other voicings
we'll use please the major nine chord so
instead of D E G C D and maybe the
second time around
change up do the regular D Big E minor 7
flat 5 to the 9 c9
there you go over a hundred different
new cords rooted on the a-string mixing
them with the e-string do whatever you
want
