Sean Daniel I'm Ian stitch and today
we're gonna give a little shine to one
of the most important unsung heroes of
the musical community the mode bro now
what is a mode bro Heon that's a great
question well a mug bro is a guy or girl
who finds himself in a particular
scenario where they say they're at a
party and there's a person playing
guitar and they're kind of okay now
they're just playing maybe pentatonic
scale they never switch positions is
stay there
flap around on the neck and all of a
sudden boy and somebody says hey you
play guitar with you guys Jam and then
all of a sudden the pressures on the
whole rooms looking at you got Jam and
what a true mode bro is a person who's
gonna step up to the plate I'm gonna
give the spotlight to that person create
a modal chord progression that's gonna
lift them up you're gonna recognize what
he's doing
yes and then get him in a position to
succeed to succeed and at the end of the
night he gets all the credit
everyone is on him and you go home drive
home by yourself you get into bed and
you you stay there you think what a good
job you know you did you're a mode bro
but the good news is is that guy will
never be able to do that again no a/c
ends up getting like a record deal
starts a YouTube channel and makes you
learn every blues song ever and eight
minutes video become super popular yes
whatever right something like the hand
yeah well being a mode bro there's no
greater reward than just having the mode
bro in you and knowing that you did a
good job being a mode bro that's right
we're gonna go over a couple examples of
how you can support another guitar
player because I'm more serious know the
the musical community is kind of
interesting right I think there's like
you go east
guitar playing and especially guys who
are actually kind of good in my opinion
this is a big ego thing because the best
were the number one best way to get
better at any instrument is to play with
musicians who are better than you and be
inspired and one of the sad things is
not every great musician is totally down
to help beginners or intermediate
players and as I think is like a total
shame it is like I remember when I was
coming up like it's so intimidating to
play with somebody better than you yeah
they should really make it a welcoming
strain they shouldn't but they hold
their secrets guarded and they don't
tell you and you feel inadequate
okay so I really I really respect all
the guys who have helped me out over the
years and the guys who've all people
like that out you know because yeah
everybody sucks at some point oh we also
have for you everybody sucks you and I
are big fans of Led Zeppelin exactly and
I say there was a moment with Jimmy Page
picked one these things up and went what
is this yeah right ah yeah and like I
still to this day I arguably suck
compared to other guy you know what I
mean it's like it's just like a never
ending thing so being able to help
musicians who need a little bit of
support lift them up to a higher place
is a very important part also but not
even telling them they just day to go oh
my god that was amazing and you go you
did good buddy you did good and you walk
into the night there you go disappear
mate make their day make their life Oh
brought you a true mode bro doesn't get
too credit that's right right let's get
down to step till now right right now so
yeah I'm gonna be the mode bro in this
scenario what okay you're gonna be the
pentatonic weekend warrior right sure
and we're gonna do something in the key
of E major right so if he's gonna play
you're good so if if he's gonna play
like an E major pentatonic right and I'm
just gonna play a key major
like okay that's that's cool I got last
about 30 seconds before you start
looking exactly okay oh that's yeah turn
on Lady gaga anything else anything else
right yeah so the mode bros gonna do
it's gonna use this knowledge of the
modes and the chords that modes make up
to enhance a minor pentatonic thing
major pentatonic major pentatonic yes
right yes and the chords them the core
is the modal cores people think modes
they think scales no individual notes in
a certain order
it's a big tiny word mode meaning plus a
lot of tiny word lots man
so what else try yeah was that you can
populate any kind of major scale thing
with chords thinking of those so if we
were just doing something to media you
would be the one for the tonic right the
major now I can kind of use other modes
and other chords from modes like I can
go from the one to maybe like the four
would be like a and the five would be me
into the six would be C minor right and
then what I can do is I can kind of like
lead the progression a certain way to
kind of cue him without him even knowing
what's gonna happen bringing him back to
Italian so we're gonna do is I'm gonna
instead of just staying on E minor I'm
gonna try to leave it this in a certain
way yes and again this is just like
counting right we're just counting in a
circle from one to seven back to one
yeah so if I can do something like if
I'm playing like a media major right and
then I need to go to the five chord
which is like this B seven and then I go
to a c-sharp minor and then I hit the
seventh note in the scale on the way
back to E I'm leading this progression
somewhere and if I do it in a way where
I'm signaling it's like hit the tonic
and I'm banging at home and he lands on
it oh when I do it then you have like a
musical mode if they had confetti
poppers they pop them boom all right so
let's try to do that right
five there we go so we gotta hit
Wow good I was man you did great
that was so cool I don't know we planned
out what skin was there's so much
there's so much in that skill this guy
this guy huh yeah right all right
I'm all right you so being a good mode
bro it's kind of about picking those
boys having the knowledge to kind of be
able to bring any kind of skilled
musician together yeah and the kind of
cohesive we Jam something out pretty
much and being a mo bro in the in that
fashion is about like you know perform
you have a party impromptu whatever come
on man that's awesome that's you gotta
know you something pretty much you gotta
know what chords go into your modal
progressions which I'm sure we'll get to
more seriously no more bets in our modes
with friends series yes some people
don't even think that chord building is
really a modal thing but III think that
just the way I see it I think the way
you see it absolutely it's a very
important part if that one's the most
the most important part it is expect
especially jamming writing a song it's
the most important part the end like
period yeah so again what real work with
the last thing I did there when I went
from the sixth floor which is the C
sharp minor I was playing a minor seven
and I'm taking this to a EU right I'm
hitting that seven I'm like
transitioning through the scale yes
right like I was gonna go like
that right there I kind of just like
sets the listener out for something and
then it resolves we both was all
together at a common word for that is
the leading tone exactly our voice
leading with voice leading the course is
to it now what an odd mode bro would do
would bring attention to himself what
you can do you could easily use these
skills for the power of evil oh yeah do
you want to go there what would that be
like a mode tease let's do it I don't
know all right yeah so I'm gonna I'm
gonna try to steal some moonshine and
this is gonna be using those for the
purpose of evil I'm still just gonna
play chords and I could play lead but
I'm gonna use my course take some of
that yeah you get from you read take the
10 yeah yeah
it's like hey there's some cool chords I
was throwing now right there yeah that
was early I was kind of doing the exact
same thing but in a flashy er way
instead of playing just a leading tone I
was adding a little chord and this half
diminished thing on the seven right and
that was like look at me and half
diminish it over here oh yeah no forget
this makes a better kind of bullcrap
after minish what the tonic yeah not a
mode bro that's not a mode bro now mode
bros are swift silent and deadly exactly
uh-huh yeah don't take the shine man be
