welcome I want to exercise number 17 and
by this I mean topic cult geocoding
addresses so what is my understanding of
geocoding addresses to get a point in
something like a Geo coordinate or a
coordinate system just by knowing the
address of it so what do you what do you
need you need something like mapping a
basis as you may have obtained by open
street maps or by your local distributor
for maps and for vector graphics and in
this case so in the exercise number 17
we already have this information called
Atlantis streets and if you know if we
are looking here on the attribute table
you can see that there are a lot of
information available here so um we have
something like there's zip codes we have
the names of the stree names of the
streets of the city
we have types of avenues and streets and
also the ranges of house numbers as you
can see here so but what do you need for
that you need some kind of a translation
system from the information of of the
given string which will represent your
address and the information that is
stored on the geo database in form of
our given table here so what do you need
is you need a matching from this
information like every office has them
for the customers some field of address
and the name and the zip code maybe and
the information that is given here in
that attribute table yes this is just
used by city street name and the ranges
of house numbers so how do you how to do
that this is a more or less two-fold
process so first of all you need an
address locator we will create a new one
just by open the our catalog toolbar
here our catalog window by pressing on
the arc catalog window button over here
and in default of my data we'll create a
new address locator so there are some
given address locators here in the S
sort of styles we will use the dual
ranges starts you can have a look on the
field on the help information here to
get a better understanding how does how
these address locators operate and what
kind of examples you have here so we
will use the dual ranges for our purpose
okay let's have a look on the open set
we have a house number Street or Avenue
number and then some kind of district I
think and the zip code 3 or 3 or 3 or 9
so we've concentrate you on the dual
ranges we have some reference data the
reference straightest of course given in
Atlanta streets and then you have a list
of used fields so you will need from
left value to left value it is suggested
here from left to left
and from right and to right um field
street name is given or the alias name
name and so on so you will just need
that and what you have to do as well as
you need to give it a new name I would
call it Atlanta customers just click on
save and click on ok now the address
locator is compiled you may imagine it
as some kind of function which will
translate your information so there it
is
Atlanta customers in the next case I
would like to show you how to get points
for certain addresses so therefore you
will need the geocoding toolbar
customize toolbars just activate the
geocoding toolbar you need to search for
a new address locators you will manage
it we will just remember ok we cannot
remove that so we will just add our new
new one true we have created if it is
already set to active and who will just
close it what now to do this you can
easily use the find function of course
you can see here use find some features
but there are also the possibilities to
find locations and we would like to find
the correct position of the location
1171 p.m. on drive no heaven
so we'll just click on find and there
are several several Kennedy candidates
listed over here
so we've have this one this one and
there are some scores so probabilities
of that this point is correct location
and as you may see here we will now just
go on the lower end of the list there
are some differences this is in the
correct position but first of all or we
can think of that this position here
with a score of ninety two point nine
three it's a correct position so um if
we will concentrate our search on
something like a zip code as roll like
any 3039 click once again find you will
have now a school of 100 which probably
means that the correct position was
found for that location so right
clicking on that location and just
search or just use the point at point
you will have a point on your map where
you can see where the address is located
and you can easily use that point
information to create maybe a point
shapefile after that but we are not
interested in creating point shape vods
hand by hand we would like to do it
automatically of course so what to do
what do you need you need the Geo
coaches geo code addresses and you will
just know we are now already on the
exercise 17 C so I 17 BS or for that so
Atlanta customers is that she is the
address located to use and what we will
like to geocode is the table customers
then you have to search for or you have
to decide whether which field is to use
for Street or section is of course the
address do we have a city name no we
don't do we have a state name no we
don't but you have a zip code
and this is fine we would like to create
a static snapshot of the table inside
the new feature class and we will like
to create a new feature class which is
called result woe address points dot SHP
we will not use any further options here
we will just click on OK and now we have
something like arm 13 addresses which
were matched and 3 addresses which are
below the 81 percent so I hope that it
is so correct value um these are
unmatched and we will concentrate on the
unmatched later on so we'll just click
on close now you can see that the
geocoding address here will just present
you or will present you all the
addresses shown but there's no point in
our shapefile where you will have that
point of course because we don't have an
address for that and so we don't have a
location for that so how to do how to
correct this is to correct the unmatched
points of course the match points on
that interesting year because we do have
the old address given here and by
looking here on the address and the name
and so on you will have also the
information from the UM reference data
set which is called in our case Atlanta
streets but yeah let's close that again
and go along with their interactive
rematch so this is just a list of your
customers and it looks a little bit
confusing here at the moment so we will
concentrate just on three windows first
of all this window will give you your
day or date of view
then you have each address here you can
select you will have the information of
this address given you in that lower
window and you can see that the status M
means matched and u means unmatched and
there's a score available so each
unmatched has a very poor score here
which is zero in case so we will now we
work that table that these three
unmatched unmatched addresses will be
matched in the end so first part here is
you can also sort by column so we will
sort now by the status so first point
this one here original address was seven
two five one Juniper Street and in fact
well just by clicking on the first one
and saying we would like to match this
address it's good enough for this one
let's go to the next one mirthful
straight and just by looking in the into
the list here we cannot see anything we
can have a look on the search button but
we need to go a little bit back um
especially we have to look in Atlanta
streets open the attribute table search
for the name of the streets let's sort
them this way and zoom down to something
called or something with M Mills Milton
Mitchell and there will be one point
where you will find some street corner
full Street as well but written like
this and so what we will do is we will
concentrate on that table and say okay
where is this debase file coming from
and maybe there are some problems with
the prior system so the street is small
s called
no sir for that so the street is more or
less called middle street like spelt
like this so um eight four four Middle
Street and once again we would like to
search for that address oh there we are
we have a match 12 candidates and the
first candidate has 100% of score so
just click that say match and
everything's fine let's go to the next
candidate here so we have 7 2 5 Lakeview
Avenue and search won't show us anything
so what's about this zip code probably
the zip code maybe not correct so what
we can do is you can once again search
for the Lakeview but we will go a little
bit further we will create a new
selection on the name where it is there
get unique values
say Lakeview no you have to say okay
it's the same boy
let's have a look on these addresses
here and as you can see the addresses
are all belonging to the zip numbers 3o
308 and we have now another information
and we could say okay maybe the zip code
wasn't taught incorrectly who searched
for that there we are we got a match of
100% just say match and say close in the
end close that one as well we'll open
the attribute table now this was one of
our candidates and now what you can see
is that you will find the point here in
the map of all at the end so this is it
how to get from an address to a point in
your shapefile or to a point shapefile
in your project I hope you enjoyed it
