series on eft automation in this video
we will look at the process of adding
synchronization points so before we you
know dive into and you know look at how
to add all these you know let us first
try to understand why we need
synchronization points so I believe you
know the best way to explain that is you
know take an example until there's a
browse to your website let's go to say
for example bbc.com
so I'm navigating to bbc.com as you can
see it's taking you know like 2 to 3
seconds to kind of load the whole page I
believe it's still loading I think it's
done now so that means you know the page
has to completely load and it is called
you know in terms of your ft it is
called you know sinking the page meaning
you know you're waiting for the whole
page to load say you know you're waiting
for this page and you wanted to
something else on this page but yeah I
mean you found the page but what if you
know the link that you're waiting for or
the image you're waiting for is still
not there yet
so you need to really make sure that the
whole page is loaded so that's one
technique and let's say for example you
know I want to click on radio so it's
gonna take a couple of seconds say for
example I want to you know click on
categories but you know categories you
know the page showed up but the
categories is still not there yet so
when that happens then you have really
you know wait for the whole page to load
or wait for this particular object to
become available right say for example I
want to click on sign-in but sign-in
never showed up so the workflow and oh
you went to global I sorry I went to BBC
comm clicked on radio go you came here
and you wanna click on sign in and then
go to you know sign in page
in so a couple of things if you go back
to pages let's see here you clicked on
radio and then your you know you got the
page but sign-in button didn't show for
a few seconds and you're trying to you
know click on an object that's not there
yet or you know object is not ready yet
say for example then there would be a
problem that means either you you know
wait for the whole page to load
completely or wait for that particular
object to become available check for its
existence or check if is enable you know
primarily those two properties right so
that's why we need to add a
synchronization pointer one of the
examples is maybe this might not be a
good case but let's say you're trying to
pull you know you're you know statement
you're trying to retrieve your bank
statement online and sometimes what
happens is some of the bank's what they
do is they ask you to request if it's
older than 12 months they ask you to
request online and it would take like a
couple of minutes or so to display a
link you know on the page that would
give you access to that older statement
so in this case you have to wait on the
page for a few seconds for that
particular link to be made available
that means you have to wait for that so
you know these are the kind of
situations in real time applications and
you would handle using synchronization
points okay well I guess enough you know
for theory and let's get into and see
how we can add those so there are you
know there are you know different ways
you can you know wait for or you can
sync for certain things or wait for
certain things so you could you know use
a wait statement you could use exists
statement you could use a sync method or
right on the web page or you can use you
know wait property on a you know
object you can wait for setting property
of an object to be available before you
go to something you know you can look at
an example and then you know inquiry you
know you can increase the default
synchronisation time or default sync
time actually that's defaults interest
or amend so what is the you know before
we dive into these let's first talk
about defaulting time so by default when
you you know when script and when you
run the script if you have T if it does
not find an object it will wait for X
amount of time and that X amount of time
is some defaulting time and that's
defined at the test level it's going to
test settings go to run this is your
object synchronization timeout it'll
wait for 20 seconds and if it doesn't
find then it will display an error
saying that object not form okay you can
you know it's an editable box it can
bump it up take it down depending on
your needs so that's a default you know
synchronization time right so you wait
for 20 seconds for a page to sing for an
object to be made available you know if
it it any given point if it is not
finding an object it will wait at for a
second that's what it means
so that's you know sometimes at 20
seconds you know might not work for you
you might want to bring it down or take
it up or you might wanna you know you
might want to control maybe you know you
don't want to increase the time default
time which one is say no more than 20
seconds but there might be a situation
where on a specific spot you want to
wait for more than one minute or two
minutes you know if you bump into that
situation you know the easiest way is
add weight statement right before you
know the line that you want to wait for
weight at right so what happens is that
whenever the UFT sees this the system
literally this test execution will pause
therefore these made a number of seconds
so in this case it'll print dear
time wait for one second then print date
and time pin wait for two seconds
same thing three seconds four seconds
five seconds let me go ahead and run it
I have five actions to demonstrate
different things but I'm controlling
this script in a different way so every
every action here has something called
exit action at the very as a very first
line so if I were to run this script it
will see that line will exit the action
but and you know every action has that
line in there so proceed it goes every
action but over the very first action is
exit actions I will go their legs if I
can go their exit the action so I'm just
using that little technique to you know
control which action I wanna execute
because I want to demonstrate this wait
so I'm gonna comment this line out and
now if I run this is the only action
that will run and let's take a look at
the output when it runs it will print
date and time wait for one second then
do the same thing wait for two seconds
do the same thing wait for three seconds
go all the way to five and you can see
the difference in seconds here three
four six nine so it's probably 18 that's
what we will see the next one
he didn't yep so it will exit other
action so as you saw you know you can
actually manually introduce some pauses
within your script and you can control
it with you know passing an argument you
know if you pass ten it'll wait for ten
seconds so that's how this you know wait
works now let's take a look at next one
which is the exists property of a object
so here this script let me go to the
very first script come in this line go
back here and comment this lines because
now I want to run you know we're on the
script all I want to read on the action
too
the rest of the actions they still have
this enabled so you know these actions
will not run primarily if you hit this
line and exit the action you go back so
here the way this works is you know dot
you know eggs it's not exist it exists

what it does is primarily to look for
existence of something and then you can
do you know you can apply some logic you
know if it is found do something if it
is not found or something so that day
when you say dot X it will literally
know wait for that object to show up
say for example you know here I'm
starting the flight simulator
application and then I'm logging in and
then I know I mean we all know when you
log in what you see is the flight
reservation you know window or screen so
after you log in I'm saying you know
until the flight reservation screen is
displayed you know keep looping it says
do you know it keeps printing this until
this shows up that exists
so that's I mean this is the exact same
do loop that you have you know learnt in
VB scripting same thing so it will look
through this and then go here then it
will wait for what two seconds after it
waited for two seconds what it does is
it will go and open this application
core open or essential our exe it will
open the application wait for not wait
it's it's a loop it will wait until the
window is open completely not until this
window core paint essential he showed up
on screen once it is done once it shows
up then it will close so until you know
you know it tries to open let's say if
it never shows up it'll just sit here
now sometimes this comes handy depending
on the need let me go ahead and run this
and see how this behaves
as you can see it printed waiting for
flight reservation once there now it's
waiting for two seconds now it started
you know kora painter application and it
finished the script so it started let's

wait there until you know this shows up

loop I mean you can this comes handy say
for example you're trying to click a
button in your application but that
button gets only enable after certain
criteria is met in the background so
you're waiting on it then you can
ecologically add this you know it's step
similar to this saying that you know if
that button is enabled then do something
so that's how you you do it and then
let's take a look at the next one which
is you know syncing the whole page it's
a pretty standard property at the page
level so here so this is trying to go to
you know what is this page bbc.com
then we'll click on a link called earth
and then that would take to this page
BBC earth it'll sync the page that'll it
when you say dot sync to make sure that
the whole page is loaded before it goes
to line 23 that's the whole purpose of
this dot sink and that sync is only
applicable to web pages let me go ahead
and run it so going to bbc.com
you would have not noticed but after
clicking here the script actually paused
hit line 21 I mean by default on torn in
nineteen it will obviously wait for you
know twenty seconds after it fires up
the page it will wait for twenty seconds
because there's a default behavior and
then it once it once the link is found
once he clicked clicked on it
once once you click on it you know let's
say if we had if this was in there it
would go here and wait for 20 seconds
but this would actually make sure that
you know we you know sync the whole page
before you V do anything in a special
and web testing this will come real
handy dot sync and next let me go ahead
and this one or the next one which is a
weight property and weight property it's
pretty interesting actually
well before we you know drive into this
example let me take you this you know
sample page that URL so this page when
you go there you know you cannot click
on this you know you don't click on

application is so then that means you
have to wait for this button to become

so let's take a look at this script and
see the behavior try to understand more
here oh okay so the very first line

print the run time property of this

HTML tag property of that particular web
element here web button so when you

what I'm doing here is I am saying I
know I'm saying that you know wait on
this button until it's in the text
changes to click me so I'm waiting on
this button using the weight property
I'm saying that you know I want the
inner text to change to this and but I'm
you know this he this is milliseconds so

it's a primarily it's waiting on the
please wait button
you know it's waiting for it to become
click me once it becomes click me it
will click on it and you're just
finishing the rest on script now you
might be thinking hey it's 20 seconds
here the default is 20 seconds you can
see the impact what we will do is we'll
go and change the run settings we know
that it annoyed the countries for 15
seconds we'll change this to you know 4
seconds so this says that you know you

for 4 seconds as a default but here it's
20 seconds we know that it's for 15
seconds so and you know what I'm gonna
change this to 30 let me run the script
so the default timeout is 4 seconds but

it's 15 seconds and I introduced 30
seconds into that line in there so it
was technically it should know wait for
30 seconds to find the object it's done
also as soon as it's found it clicked on
it and now we have you know that message
and it took care of it well so that's
the you know beauty of the weight
property so you can programmatically
look for something wait for you know it
to come up and then proceed with the
test so that's the beauty of the weight
property so well that's all about
synchronization points and just to just
a quick recap you know we can use a
weight this is not exist exist so we
used to weight a statement to pause the
execution for you know X amount of time
probably know in seconds and then we
used exist property by using loop you
know we waited until certain thing you
know it shows up and we were able to
sing the pages using that sink and then
we use dot wait property there's a dot
wait property or is it here dot wait
property to you know wait on the object
until you know it's proper new value of
the property you know shows up so this
comes real handy and also let me show
you the sample application where you
could you know use it in windows-based
applications and so one of the good
example here is let's say for example
you know you cannot you know get the
order number until you have this you
know order is inserted and another thing
is that you know this doesn't get
enabled until you have few other things
awkward down let's say for example I
need to click sorry
take it there so this doesn't get enable
until I enter some name there that's one
thing so if you're waiting on this thing
you know you can you know pretty much
weight on this button becoming enabled
so that that's just a quick example well
