  • b)
    Cast iron
  • c)
    Pig rion
  • d)
    Spongy iron
Correct answer is option 'A'. Can you explain this answer?

Shivani Mishra answered
Explanation:

Carbon is one of the important elements that are used in the production of different types of iron. The amount of carbon present in iron determines its properties and characteristics. The following are the different types of iron and the amount of carbon present in them.

Wrought Iron:

Wrought iron is a type of iron that has a very low carbon content, usually less than 0.1%. It is produced by melting iron ore in a furnace and then removing the impurities. This process results in a pure form of iron that is malleable and ductile. Wrought iron is mainly used in the production of ornamental items, such as gates, railings, and furniture.

Cast Iron:

Cast iron is a type of iron that has a higher carbon content than wrought iron, usually between 2% and 4%. It is produced by melting iron ore along with scrap iron and limestone in a furnace. Cast iron is very brittle and cannot be shaped easily. It is mainly used in the production of engine blocks, pipes, and other industrial applications.

Pig Iron:

Pig iron is the intermediate product that is obtained during the production of cast iron. It is produced by melting iron ore along with coke and limestone in a blast furnace. Pig iron has a high carbon content, usually between 3.5% and 4.5%. It is mainly used in the production of cast iron and steel.

Spongy Iron:

Spongy iron is a type of iron that is produced by reducing iron ore in a furnace. It has a very low carbon content, usually less than 0.1%. Spongy iron is mainly used in the production of steel.

Conclusion:

From the above explanation, it is clear that wrought iron has the least amount of carbon present in it.
