  • b)
    Yamuna

Correct answer is option 'A'. Can you explain this answer?

Alok Verma answered
It has been reported that an old project to facilitate the movement of hilsa upstream along the Ganga to its spawning grounds of yore may come to fruition this year.
  • In scientific parlance, the hilsa (Tenualosa ilisha) is an anadromous fish.
  • That is, it lives most of its life in the ocean, but during the rainy season, when it is time to spawn, the hilsa moves towards the estuary, where the rivers of India and Bangladesh meet the Bay of Bengal.
  • A large part of the shoal travels upstream in the Padma and the Ganga — some are known to move towards the Godavari, and there are records of hilsa migration to the Cauvery.
Farakka Barrage Lock
  • Historical records also show that until the 1970s, the hilsa would swim the Ganga upstream to Allahabad — and even to Agra.
  • But the Farakka Barrage, which became operational on the Ganga in 1975, disrupted the westward movement of the hilsa.
  • The barrage had a navigation lock that stopped the fish from swimming upstream beyond Farakka. In Buxar on the border of Bihar and Uttar Pradesh, the last recorded catch of the hilsa was made 32 years ago.
Fish ladders/fishways/fish passes
  • In 2016, Union Water Resources Minister told Lok Sabha about plans to create “fish ladders” to help the fish navigate the obstacle posed by the barrage.
  • In February 2019, the government had unveiled a project to redesign the navigation lock at the Farakka Barrage at a cost of Rs 360 crore to create a “fish pass” for the hilsa.
  • Fish passes — also known as fish ladders or fishways — aim to assist fish in crossing obstacles presented by dams and barrages.
  • They usually consist of small steps that allow the fish to climb over the obstacles and enable them to reach the open waters on the other side.

Correct answer is option 'D'. Can you explain this answer?

Avi Sengupta answered
Understanding Delimitation Commission in India
The Delimitation Commission plays a crucial role in redrawing the boundaries of electoral constituencies in India. However, the statement regarding the number of times it has been set up is incorrect.
Key Points on Delimitation Commission:
- Delimitation Defined:
Delimitation refers to the process of redrawing the boundaries of Lok Sabha and State Assembly seats based on changes in population and demographic shifts.
- Legal Framework:
Under Article 82 of the Indian Constitution, the Parliament is required to enact a Delimitation Act after every Census to ensure that the representation in the legislature reflects the population changes.
- Delimitation History:
There has been no delimitation exercise conducted after the 1981 and 1991 Censuses, which is significant as it shows a gap in the process that is supposed to reflect demographic changes.
- Delimitation Commissions Established:
Contrary to option D, which states that Delimitation Commissions have been set up seven times since Independence, the actual number is five. These commissions were established in the years 1952, 1963, 1972, 2002, and 2020.
Conclusion:
Therefore, the statement in option D is incorrect as it overstates the number of times the Delimitation Commission has been established in India. Understanding this aspect is essential for comprehending how electoral representation is managed in the country.

  • As per the guidelines issued by the Department of Expenditure, the States undertaking reforms in power sector are granted permission to raise additional financial resources of up to 0.25 percent of the GSDP.
  • This is linked to a set of 3 reforms in the sector:
    • 0.05 % of GSDP for a reduction in Aggregate Technical & Commercial losses in the State as per prescribed targets.
    • Another, 0.05 % of GSDP is allowed for a reduction in the gap between the Average Cost of Supply and Average Revenue Realisation (ACS-ARR gap) in the State as per prescribed targets.
    • Finally, 0.15 % of GSDP of the State's introduction of Direct Benefit Transfer (DBT) to all farmers in the State in lieu of free/ subsidised electricity is finally considered. Correct answer is option 'C'. Can you explain this answer?

Suresh Khanna answered
Rising yields on government securities or bonds in the United States and India have triggered concern over the negative impact on other asset classes, especially stock markets, and even gold.
  • Bond yield is the return an investor gets on that bond or on particular government security.
  • The major factors affecting the yield is the monetary policy of the Reserve Bank of India, especially the course of interest rates, the fiscal position of the government and its borrowing programme, global markets, economy, and inflation.
  • A fall in interest rates makes bond prices rise, and bond yields fall — and rising interest rates cause bond prices to fall, and bond yields to rise.
  • In short, a rise in bond yields means interest rates in the monetary system have fallen, and the returns for investors (those who invested in bonds and govt securities) have declined.
  • The yield on 10-year bonds in India moved up from the recent low of 5.76% to 6.20% in line with the rise in US yields, sending jitters through the stock market, where the benchmark Sensex fell 2,300 points last week.

With reference to the glacial lake outburst floods (GLOFs), consider the following statements:
1. A GLOF refers to the flooding that occurs when the water dammed by a glacier or a moraine is released suddenly.
2. Unlike earthen dams, the moraine dam's weak structure leads to the abrupt failure of the dam on top of the glacial lake, which holds large volume of water.

    1 only
  • b)
    2 only
  • c)
    Both 1 and 2
  • d)
    Neither 1 nor 2
Correct answer is option 'C'. Can you explain this answer?

Kiran Reddy answered
A glacier break is suspected to have caused the flash floods in Uttarakhand’s Chamoli.
  • When glaciers melt, the water in glacial lakes accumulates behind loose, natural “glacial/moraine dams” made of ice, sand, pebbles and ice residue.
  • A GLOF refers to the flooding that occurs when the water dammed by a glacier or a moraine is released suddenly.
  • Unlike earthen dams, the weak structure of the moraine dam leads to the abrupt failure of the dam on top of the glacial lake, which holds a large volume of water.
  • A failure of the dam has the potential of releasing millions of cubic metres of water in a short period, causing catastrophic flooding downstream.
Reasons
  • Glacial retreat due to climate change occurring in most parts of the Hindu Kush Himalaya has given rise to the formation of numerous new glacial lakes, which are the major cause of GLOFs.
  • An “Inventory and Monitoring of Glacial Lakes / Water Bodies in the Himalayan Region of Indian River Basins” found that there are 352, 283 and 1,393 glacial lakes and water bodies in the Indus, Ganga and Brahmaputra basins respectively.
Recommendation
  • NDMA has recommended the use of Synthetic-Aperture Radar imagery to automatically detect changes in water bodies, including new lake formations, during the monsoon months.

2. Save up to 50% on the fuel cost.
3. Less power in comparison to Diesel-run engine.

    1 and 2 only
  • c)
    2 and 3 only
  • d)
    1, 2 and 3
Correct answer is option 'B'. Can you explain this answer?

Ankit Roy answered
Benefits of Converting Tractors to CNG
Converting a tractor from diesel to compressed natural gas (CNG) offers several advantages for farmers, making it an appealing option for agricultural operations.
1. Reduced Emissions
- Overall emissions are reduced by 70%: CNG is a cleaner fuel compared to diesel. When a tractor operates on CNG, it emits significantly fewer harmful pollutants, contributing to better air quality and a healthier environment. This reduction in emissions is a major selling point for switching to CNG.
2. Cost Savings on Fuel
- Save up to 50% on fuel costs: One of the most compelling reasons for converting to CNG is the potential for reduced fuel expenses. CNG is generally cheaper than diesel, and farmers can experience substantial savings over time, allowing for better budget management in their farming operations.
3. Power Comparison
- Less power in comparison to Diesel-run engines: This statement is true; however, it is a disadvantage rather than a benefit. CNG engines can sometimes provide less power than their diesel counterparts, which may affect performance, especially in heavy-duty applications.
Conclusion
Given this analysis:
- Statement 1 is a benefit as it highlights reduced emissions.
- Statement 2 is also a benefit due to the significant savings on fuel costs.
- Statement 3, while true, is a disadvantage and should not be included in the benefits.
Thus, the correct answer is b) 1 and 2 only. This choice accurately reflects the positive aspects of converting tractors to CNG while excluding the drawback related to power.

  • It is the only living species in the genus Dermochelys and family Dermochelyidae.
  • It can easily be differentiated from other modern sea turtles by its lack of a bony shell, hence the name. Instead, its carapace is covered by skin and oily flesh.
  • They are listed in Schedule I of India’s Wildlife Protection Act, 1972, according it the highest legal protection.
Budget 2021:
  • The A&N Islands are prominent in the National Marine Turtle Action Plan released on February 1, 2021, by the Ministry of Environment.
  • The plan notes that “India has identified all its important sea turtle nesting habitats as ‘Important Coastal and Marine Biodiversity Areas’ and included them in the Coastal Regulation Zone (CRZ) – 1”.
  • South Bay and West Bay on Little Andaman and Galathea on Great Nicobar, along with other nesting beaches in the islands, find a specific mention here as “Important Marine Turtle Habitats in India” and the largest Leatherback nesting grounds in India.
  • There is concern that at least three key nesting beaches — two on Little Andaman Island and one on Great Nicobar Island — are under threat due to mega “development” plans announced in recent months.
  • These include NITI Aayog’s ambitious tourism vision for Little Andaman and the proposal for a mega-shipment port at Galathea Bay on Great Nicobar Island.
  • The Little Andaman plan, which proposes phased growth of tourism on this virtually untouched island, has sought the de-reservation of over 200 sq km of pristine rainforest and also of about 140 sq km of the Onge Tribal Reserve.

Dr JB Ekka committee, recently seen in the news, is related to:
  • a)
equal wages of small tea workers.
  • b)
    rebalancing defence expenditure.
  • c)
    national security
  • d)
    food labelling standards
Correct answer is option 'A'. Can you explain this answer?

Kiran Reddy answered
The Assam government announced that the wage of tea garden workers will be increased from Rs 167 to Rs 217 per day. Although the tea garden managements pay the wages, the government fixes it.
  • Moreover, for equal wages of small tea workers, a one-man committee under Principal Secretary Dr JB Ekka will be formed.
  • Coming ahead of the state elections, the announcement is important because the tea tribe community — comprising 17% of the state’s population — is a deciding factor in almost 40 Assam Assembly seats out of the 126.
  • The community is spread over in 800 tea gardens plus several unorganised small gardens of Assam. It is marked by exploitation, economic backwardness, poor health conditions and low literacy rates.
  • Last Sunday, Congress leader Rahul Gandhi said in a rally in the state that the party will ensure a Rs 365 per day wage to tea garden workers of Assam if elected to power.
  • In the Union Budget presented by Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman on February 1, Rs 1,000 crore was announced for the welfare of tea workers in Assam and West Bengal.

Correct answer is option 'A'. Can you explain this answer?

Nidhi Pillai answered
Explanation:

Statement 1:
The statement is correct. Rashtriya Yuva Sashaktikaran Karyakram (RYSK) is indeed a Central Sector Scheme, which means that the funding and implementation of the scheme are entirely borne by the central government.

Statement 2:
The statement is incorrect. The budget allocation of the scheme RYSK for the year 2020-21 is not Rs. 10000 Crores. The actual budget allocation may vary each year based on the government's priorities and financial resources available.
In conclusion, only statement 1 is correct, as RYSK is a Central Sector Scheme. The budget allocation mentioned in statement 2 is not accurate and may change from year to year.

Wizius Careers answered
In granting bail to 22-year-old climate change activist Disha Ravi on Tuesday, the trial court in Delhi rejected the Delhi Police charge that she was part of a "larger conspiracy" to incite violence in the national capital on January 26.
  • Section 120A of the Indian Penal Code (IPC) defines criminal conspiracy; Section 120B prescribes the punishment for it.
  • An "agreement" between two or more persons to commit a criminal offence constitutes the offence of criminal conspiracy.
  • Only an agreement is necessary and sufficient to establish the charge of conspiracy, even if the actual criminal offence itself has not been committed. Criminal conspiracy is a substantive offence in itself.
  • The law in its current form was added in 1913, nearly four decades after the IPC was first enacted. The provision was designed by the British to deal with the rising nationalist sentiment in India.
