The problem involves calculating the distance between two objects moving towards each other with different directions, distances, and speeds.


Given Information


  • Distance between the two objects = 200m

  • After walking 60m, I turn left and go 20m

  • You turn right and go 40m

  • You turn right again and come back to the original place



Solution

As we know, the distance between the two objects is 200m, and both are moving towards each other. Therefore, the distance between them will decrease as they move closer.


Let's first calculate the distance I covered:


  • I covered 60m before turning.

  • Then I covered 20m after turning left.

  • Therefore, the total distance covered by me = 60m + 20m = 80m



Now, let's calculate the distance you covered:


  • You covered 40m after turning right.

  • You then turned right again and came back to the original place, which means you covered 40m more.

  • Therefore, the total distance covered by you = 40m + 40m = 80m



As both of us have the same speed, we covered the same distance of 80m each.


Now, if we draw a diagram, we can see that we formed a right-angled triangle, where the distance between us is the hypotenuse.


Using the Pythagorean theorem, we can calculate the hypotenuse (distance between us):


  • a² + b² = c²

  • Here, a = 80m and b = 200m (distance between us at the start)

  • Therefore, c² = 80² + 200²

  • c² = 6400 + 40000

  • c² = 46400

  • c = sqrt(46400)

  • c = 215.44m (approx.)



Answer

Therefore, the distance between us after we covered the given distances and directions is approximately 215.44m.
