Problem:

A precious stone broke into two pieces whose weights are in the ratio 3:4. The value of the stone varies with the square of its weight. If the loss in the value of the stone is due to breakage is rupees 9600, the value of the original stone is?

Solution:

Let the original weight of the stone be 7x (3x + 4x) and its value be V.

Calculation of Loss:

The weight of the first part = 3x
The weight of the second part = 4x
The loss in weight due to breakage = (3x + 4x) - 7x = x

The loss in value is proportional to the square of the weight loss. Hence the loss in value is:

= V * (x/7x)^2

= V * (1/49)

= 9600

=> V = 9600 * 49

=> V = 470400

Final Answer:

The value of the original stone is Rs. 4,70,400.
