Administrating System of the Mauryas

The Maurya Empire, which thrived from 322 BCE to 185 BCE, was one of the largest and most powerful empires in ancient India. Under the reign of Chandragupta Maurya and his successors, the Mauryan administration was highly organized and efficient. Each village had a headman known as the "Gramika," who assisted the Vishayapati in the day-to-day administration of the village.

4. Revenue Administration:
The Mauryan Empire had a highly efficient revenue administration system. The empire relied heavily on agriculture, and the collection of revenue from agricultural lands was a crucial aspect of the administration. The revenue officials, known as "Samahartas," assessed the land and collected taxes from the farmers. The revenue collected was used to finance various administrative expenses, including the maintenance of the military, construction of infrastructure, and welfare activities.

5. Judicial Administration:
The Mauryan Empire had a well-developed judicial system to ensure the dispensation of justice. The king appointed judges known as "Dharmasthas" to hear and resolve legal disputes. The judicial officials were responsible for maintaining law and order, punishing criminals, and resolving civil matters. They followed the principles of dharma (righteousness) and administered justice based on the laws and customs prevalent during that time.
