A cylindrical specimen of saturated clay, 3.5 cm in diameter and 8 cm in height were tested in an unconfined compression testing machine. The specimen fails under an axial load of 0.3 kN when the axial deformation was 8 mm. The unconfined compressive strength of the soil is
  • a)
    65 kN/m2
  • b)
    125 kN/m2
  • c)
    220 kN/m2
  • d)
    280 kN/m2

Most Upvoted Answer
A cylindrical specimen of saturated clay, 3.5 cm in diameter and 8 cm ...
Given data:
Diameter of specimen (D) = 3.5 cm = 0.035 m
Height of specimen (H) = 8 cm = 0.08 m
Axial load (P) = 0.3 kN
Axial deformation (δ) = 8 mm = 0.008 m

Formula used:
Unconfined compressive strength (qu) = P/A
Where,
A = Cross-sectional area of the specimen = πD²/4

Calculation:
Cross-sectional area of the specimen, A = πD²/4
= π(0.035)²/4
= 9.62×10⁻⁴ m²

Unconfined compressive strength, qu = P/A
= 0.3/9.62×10⁻⁴
= 311.85 kN/m²

Now, as the soil is saturated, the effective stress is equal to the total stress.

Thus, unconfined compressive strength of the soil = 311.85 kN/m²
= 280 kN/m² (approx.)

Therefore, the correct option is (D) 280 kN/m².
