  • Nitrogen is the most electronegative among Arsenic, Nitrogen and Phosphorus.
  • As per the periodic table, Nitrogen has an atomic number of 7 and hence its electron configuration is 1s2 2s2 2p3.
  • Amongst all the others nitrogen has the highest tendency to attract a shared pair of electrons towards itself.

Electronegativity is a measure of the tendency of an atom to attract a shared pair of electrons towards itself in a chemical bond. It helps us determine the polarity of a bond. The element with the highest electronegativity is considered the most electronegative.

Comparison of electronegativity:

The electronegativity values of the given elements are as follows:

- Nitrogen: 3.04
- Phosphorus: 2.19
- Arsenic: 2.18

Nitrogen has the highest electronegativity among the three elements. It attracts electrons more strongly compared to Phosphorus and Arsenic. This is due to the following reasons:

- Atomic Size: Nitrogen has a smaller atomic size compared to Phosphorus and Arsenic. As the atomic size decreases, the effective nuclear charge (the positive charge felt by the valence electrons) increases. This increased effective nuclear charge attracts the shared electrons more strongly, increasing the electronegativity.

- Electron Configuration: Nitrogen has a half-filled p orbital (2px^2, 2py^1) in its valence shell. Half-filled orbitals are more stable, so Nitrogen has a greater tendency to attract electrons to achieve a stable configuration.

- Electronegativity Trend: Electronegativity generally increases across a period from left to right in the periodic table. Nitrogen is to the right of Phosphorus and Arsenic, so it has a higher electronegativity.

Therefore, Nitrogen is the most electronegative element among Arsenic, Nitrogen, and Phosphorus. It has a stronger pull on the shared electrons in a chemical bond.
