It seems like every day you turn on the local news and you hear about someone being murdered in our city. It is really frightening. I am not sure I want to live somewhere so violent, and crime is clearly going up here. Otherwise the news shows wouldn't have so many murders to report.
Which of the following, if true, most weakens the argument above?
  • a)
Federal statistics show that crime in the city has dropped by 2% over the last year.
  • b)
Local groups have encouraged the media to do more reporting on crimes committed against minorities in the city.
  • c)
Studies have shown that as crime rates decrease in a city, media coverage of violent crime often increases, giving a false impression of more crime.
  • d)
The speaker watches three different newscasts every day.
  • e)
Federal statistics show that the crime rate in the city has remained steady.
Correct answer is option 'C'. Can you explain this answer?
Verified Answer
It seems like every day you turn on the local news and you hear about ...
C is correct because the speaker is basing his/her conclusion on the amount of news coverage of murders, Since the station may be increasing coverage even if crimes rates are falling, the impression that more news equates with more crime in not necessarily true.
A is incorrect because it does not speak to the speaker's perception that more news equates to more crime.
B is incorrect because it is unknown whether the media has responded to the groups' urging to cover these crimes, nor is it known if these crimes are on the increase or decrease.
D is incorrect because, while watching multiple news shows a day might give one a perception of more coverage, it does not speak to whether the actual crime rate is rising.
E is incorrect because it does not speak to the speaker's perception of more crime.

Analysis:
The argument states that the frequency of murder reports in the local news indicates an increase in crime and suggests that the city is becoming more violent and unsafe. To weaken this argument, we need to find an option that provides an alternate explanation for the high number of murder reports on the news.

Option C:
Studies have shown that as crime rates decrease in a city, media coverage of violent crime often increases, giving a false impression of more crime.

This option weakens the argument by suggesting that the media coverage of violent crime may not accurately reflect the actual crime rate in the city. Let's analyze this option in more detail.

Explanation:
The key point in option C is that media coverage of violent crime often increases as crime rates decrease. This phenomenon can occur for several reasons:

1. Sensationalism: Media outlets may prioritize reporting on violent crime because it attracts more viewership or readership. By focusing on violent incidents, they can generate more attention and increase their ratings or circulation.

2. Lack of other news: In cities with lower crime rates, there may be fewer significant news events to report. As a result, media outlets may choose to highlight violent crime stories to fill their news broadcasts or newspapers.

3. Public perception: When crime rates decrease, people may become more sensitive to even minor incidents, leading to increased reporting and public awareness of violent crime.

Considering these factors, it is plausible that the high number of murder reports in the local news does not necessarily indicate an increase in crime. Instead, it could be a result of media coverage practices or a lack of other newsworthy events.

Therefore, option C weakens the argument by suggesting that the frequency of murder reports in the local news may not accurately reflect the actual crime rate in the city. It presents an alternative explanation for the high number of murder reports, indicating that the city may not be as violent and unsafe as the argument assumes.
