15 gallons of water has already entered the ship. 45 more gallons will enter in order for the ship to sink. So it takes 4.5 hours. The ferry has to travel 70 km and return 100 km before it sinks. Speed of stream from Rock memorial to Kanniyakumari is 2 km/hr

A fery carries passengers to Rock of Vivekananda and back from Kanyaku...
See this is a question which can be solve by option and that will also come in approx
he has gone for 90 min so distance travelled will be 27 km so

73/(x-2)+100/(y+2)=4.5
now substitute value when you put x = 42 and y=36 the answer will be approx 4.5 and I think it can't be solved without option because it would have multiple answer as value if x change value of y also change because it's not given that boat will travel with same speed both way.

A fery carries passengers to Rock of Vivekananda and back from Kanyaku...
Calculating the time taken to reach the Rock of Vivekananda:
- Time taken to cover 100 km at 20 km/hr = 100/20 = 5 hours
- After 90 minutes (1.5 hours), the crew realized about the hole
- So, remaining time to reach the destination = 5 - 1.5 = 3.5 hours

Calculating the water filled in the ferry:
- Water filled in the ferry after 90 minutes = 15 gallons
- Water entering per hour = 10 gallons
- Total water needed to sink the ferry = 60 gallons
- Remaining water needed to sink the ferry = 60 - 15 = 45 gallons
- Time taken to fill 45 gallons at 10 gallons/hr = 45/10 = 4.5 hours

Calculating the total time available to return back to Kanyakumari:
- Time taken to reach the destination = 5 hours
- Time taken to fill the remaining water = 4.5 hours
- Total time = 5 + 4.5 = 9.5 hours

Calculating the speed for the return journey:
- Distance from Rock of Vivekananda to Kanyakumari = 100 km
- Current of the sea water = 2 km/hr
- Effective speed towards the Rock = 20 km/hr
- Time taken to reach the Rock = 5 hours
- Time taken for the return journey = 9.5 - 5 = 4.5 hours
- Distance for return journey = 100 km + 100 km = 200 km
- Speed towards the Rock = 20 km/hr
- Speed for return journey = (200 + 2*200)/4.5 = 600/4.5 = 133.33 km/hr
- Speed for return journey considering the current = 133.33 - 2 = 131.33 km/hr
Therefore, the driver should now drive the ferry at a speed of 42 km/hr towards the Rock of Vivekananda and 36 km/hr while returning to Kanyakumari to reach just in time before the ferry sinks.
