Saturation Region of BJT Transistor

The saturation region is one of the operating modes of a bipolar junction transistor (BJT). In this mode, the transistor is fully turned on, and the collector-emitter voltage (VCE) is reduced to a minimum value. The collector current (IC) in the saturation region is independent of the collector-emitter voltage and is mainly determined by the base current (IB).

Proportional to the Square Root of Collector Current

Option B is the correct answer. In the saturation region, the collector current (IC) is proportional to the square root of the base current (IB). This relationship is expressed by the following equation:

IC = β/2 * (VBE - VCEsat)^2

where β is the current gain of the transistor, VBE is the base-emitter voltage, and VCEsat is the saturation voltage between the collector and emitter.

Explanation

The equation above shows that the collector current is proportional to the square of the difference between the base-emitter voltage and the saturation voltage. In the saturation region, the saturation voltage is very low, so the collector current is mainly determined by the base-emitter voltage.

As the base current increases, the base-emitter voltage also increases, resulting in a higher collector current. However, the rate of increase in the collector current decreases as the base current increases, since the transistor is already in saturation.

Conclusion

In conclusion, the saturation region of a BJT transistor is characterized by a collector current that is proportional to the square root of the base current. This relationship is expressed by the equation IC = β/2 * (VBE - VCEsat)^2, where β is the current gain of the transistor, VBE is the base-emitter voltage, and VCEsat is the saturation voltage between the collector and emitter.
