The original sentence expresses the main verb “attended” in the past tense and the two subordinate actions in the form of the gerund. This construction correctly indicates that “receiving” and developing” followed as a consequence of Einstein’s attendance of “the Swiss Federal Polytechnic School in Zurich.”
(A) CORRECT. This answer choice is correct as it repeats the original sentence.
(B) This answer choice breaks the correct parallelism of "receiving" and "developing" present in the original sentence.
(C) This answer choice expresses all the verbs in the underlined portion in the same form: “attended,” “received,” and “developed.” This change alters the original meaning of the sentence by making these actions independent and sequential rather than demonstrating that “receiving” and “developing” occurred as a consequence of the
fact that “Albert Einstein attended the Swiss Federal Polytechnic School in Zurich.” Further, this answer choice introduces the redundant pronoun “he” that unnecessarily repeats the subject of the sentence and breaks parallelism.
(D) This answer choice makes "attended" and "received" parallel, leaving "developing" as a subordinate action. This change alters the meaning of the sentence, as described above in the explanation for choice (C). Moreover, there is no "and" between "attended" and "received," as there should always be between the items in a two-item list.
(E) This answer choice creates an incomplete sentence that lacks the main verb and consists merely of a series of gerunds: “attending,” “receiving,” and “developing.”

S, Albert Einstein obtained Swiss citizenship in 1901. He worked at the Swiss Patent Office in Bern from 1902 to 1909 while also pursuing his scientific research. It was during this time that he published several groundbreaking papers, including his theory of relativity. In 1905, he published the special theory of relativity, which introduced the famous equation E=mc². This equation revolutionized the understanding of energy, mass, and the relationship between the two.

Einstein's work gained international recognition, and he began collaborating with other scientists from around the world. In 1915, he completed his general theory of relativity, which expanded on the special theory and provided a new understanding of gravity. This theory was confirmed through observations of a solar eclipse in 1919, catapulting Einstein to fame.

Einstein's scientific contributions continued throughout his life, and he received numerous awards and honors for his work. In 1921, he was awarded the Nobel Prize in Physics for his explanation of the photoelectric effect, which demonstrated the particle-like behavior of light. However, his most famous equation, E=mc², did not receive the Nobel Prize recognition.

In addition to his scientific pursuits, Einstein was also a prominent pacifist and advocate for civil rights. He spoke out against war and injustice and was involved in various humanitarian efforts. Einstein left Switzerland in 1933 due to political developments in Germany, where he faced persecution as a Jewish intellectual. He moved to the United States and accepted a position at the Institute for Advanced Study in Princeton, New Jersey.

Einstein continued his research and mentoring at Princeton, becoming a beloved figure in the scientific community. He published further papers, including his unified field theory, but was unable to complete it before his death in 1955. Einstein's legacy as one of the greatest scientific minds of all time continues to inspire and influence the field of physics to this day.
