Heat Transfer through Fins

Fins are used to enhance heat transfer by increasing the surface area available for heat transfer. Heat transfer through fins can be understood by considering the following statements:

Variable Temperature along the Fin

The temperature along the fin is variable and hence the rate of heat transfer varies along the elements of the fin. The temperature at the base of the fin is the same as the temperature of the wall, while the temperature at the tip of the fin is the same as the temperature of the fluid. The temperature distribution along the fin is given by the heat conduction equation.

Higher Thermal Conductivity of Fins

The fins may be made of materials that have a higher thermal conductivity than the material of the wall. This is because the rate of heat transfer through the fin is proportional to the thermal conductivity of the fin material.

Arrangement of Fins

Fins must be arranged at right angles to the direction of flow of the working fluid. This is because the heat transfer rate is proportional to the surface area of the fin in contact with the fluid. Fins parallel to the fluid flow do not increase the surface area available for heat transfer and hence do not enhance heat transfer.

Effectiveness of Fins

Fins are equally effective irrespective of whether they are on the hot side or cold side of the fluid. This is because fins increase the surface area available for heat transfer and hence enhance heat transfer in both cases.

Conclusion

In conclusion, heat transfer through fins can be enhanced by using materials with higher thermal conductivity and arranging the fins at right angles to the direction of flow of the working fluid. The temperature distribution along the fin is variable and the rate of heat transfer varies along the elements of the fin.
