Solution:

Given data:

Temperature inside the cold storage = 5°C

Temperature outside the cold storage = 35°C

Heat leakage from the outside to the cold storage = 29 kW

COP of the refrigeration plant = 1/3 of ideal COP

To find: Power required to drive the plant

Formula used:

COP of the refrigeration plant = (Desired effect) / (Work input)

Desired effect = Heat removed from the cold storage

Work input = Power required to drive the refrigeration plant

Total heat leakage from the surroundings to the cold storage is given as 29 kW.

So, the heat removed by the refrigeration plant from the cold storage is 29 kW.

COP of the plant is given as 1/3 of the ideal COP.

Therefore, the actual COP of the plant is 1/3 x COP of the ideal plant.

The COP of the ideal plant can be calculated as follows:

COP of the ideal plant = (Temperature inside the cold storage) / (Temperature outside the cold storage - Temperature inside the cold storage)

COP of the ideal plant = (5 - (-35)) / (35 - 5)

COP of the ideal plant = 2

COP of the actual plant = (1/3) x 2

COP of the actual plant = 0.67

Using the formula of COP, we can find the power required to drive the plant as follows:

COP = Heat removed / Work input

Work input = Heat removed / COP

Work input = 29 / 0.67

Work input = 43.28 kW

Therefore, the power required to drive the plant is 12.98 kW (approx).

Hence, option (a) is the correct answer.
