Transition capacitance occurs in reverse bias. We obtain a depletion layer in that case. Hence it’s also called as depletion capacitance. The diffusion capacitance occurs in forward bias.

Depletion capacitance

Depletion capacitance is the capacitance that exists across a p-n junction when it is reverse biased. It is also called transition capacitance.

Explanation

When a p-n junction is reverse biased, the majority carriers are pushed away from the junction, leaving behind a region which is depleted of charge carriers. This region is called the depletion region.

The depletion region acts like a dielectric material in a capacitor, with the p and n regions serving as the two plates. The width of the depletion region, which depends on the amount of reverse bias applied, determines the amount of charge that can be stored and hence the capacitance.

The depletion capacitance is given by the expression:

Cj = (A/ϵ) x (q x Nd x Na) / (Nd + Na)

where,
Cj = junction capacitance
A = junction area
ϵ = permittivity of the semiconductor material
q = charge of an electron
Nd and Na = doping concentrations of the p and n regions respectively

Depletion capacitance is an important parameter in the design of diodes and other semiconductor devices. It affects the frequency response and switching speed of these devices.
