    In tetrahedral coordination complexes, the d orbitals also split into two sets, but the energy difference is smaller than in octahedral complexes. The energy difference between these two sets is denoted by Δt.

    The crystal field splitting energy determines the color and magnetic properties of transition metal complexes. It affects the absorption of light and the energy levels of the d electrons, which in turn influences the electronic and magnetic properties of the complex.
