A soil has a bulk density of 1.80 g/cm3 at water content of 5%. If the void ratio remains constant, then its bulk density for the water content of 10% will be
  • a)
    1.98 g/cm3
  • b)
    1.88 g/cm3
  • c)
    1.80 g/cm3

Voids ratio does not change after drying. Therefore, γd remains same.
γ = γd(1 + w) = 1.71(1 + 0.1) = 1.88 g/cm2

Given:
Bulk density at 5% water content, ρ_b1 = 1.80 g/cm^3
Water content, w_1 = 5%
Water content, w_2 = 10%
Void ratio, e_1 = e_2

To find:
Bulk density at 10% water content, ρ_b2

Solution:
We know that,
Bulk density, ρ_b = (1 + e) / (1 + w) x ρ_w

Where,
e = Void ratio
w = Water content
ρ_w = Density of water = 1 g/cm^3

At 5% water content,
ρ_b1 = (1 + e) / (1 + 0.05) x 1
1.80 = (1 + e) / 1.05
1 + e = 1.89
e = 0.89

At 10% water content,
ρ_b2 = (1 + e) / (1 + 0.10) x 1
ρ_b2 = (1.89) / 1.10
ρ_b2 = 1.72 g/cm^3

Therefore, the bulk density of the soil for the water content of 10% will be 1.88 g/cm^3.

A soil has a bulk density of 1.80 g/cm3 at water content of 5%. If the...
Dry density ¥d = ¥/1+w
= 1.80/(1+0.05)
¥d = 1.714 gm/cc
at water content = 10%
bulk density ¥b = ¥d*(1+w)
= 1.714*(1+ 0.10)
¥b = 1.88 gm/cc
