The reaction between one molecule of HBr and one molecule of 1,3-butadiene at 40°C is an example of an electrophilic addition reaction. At this temperature, the reaction proceeds via a Markovnikov addition, where the hydrogen atom from HBr attaches to the carbon atom with the most hydrogen atoms attached (the terminal carbon atom) in the 1,3-butadiene molecule.

The reaction mechanism involves the formation of a carbocation intermediate. Initially, the electrophilic hydrogen atom from HBr attacks the π-electron cloud of the 1,3-butadiene, breaking one of the π-bonds and forming a carbocation intermediate. The bromide ion then acts as a nucleophile, attacking the carbocation and forming a new C-Br bond. This results in the addition of HBr across the double bond of the 1,3-butadiene molecule.

The final product of the reaction is 3-bromobutene, where the bromine atom is attached to the terminal carbon atom of the original 1,3-butadiene molecule.

Overall reaction:
1,3-butadiene + HBr → 3-bromobutene
