In an 8 X 8 chessboard a queen placed anywhere can attack another piece if the piece is present in the same row, or in the same column or in any diagonal position in any possible 4 directions, provided there is no other piece in between in the path from the queen to that piece.
The columns are labelled a to h (left to right) and the rows are numbered 1 to 8 (bottom to top). The position of a piece is given by the combination of column and row labels. For example, position c5 means that the piece is in ctn column and 5tn row.

  • a)
    f8
  • b)

In an 8X 8chessboard a queen placed anywhere can attack another piece ...
Analysis:
To find the maximum number of pieces under attack, we need to consider each possible position of the queen and count the number of pieces it can attack. Let's analyze each option one by one.

Option A: Position f8
If the queen is placed at f8, it can attack any piece in the same row (f1 to f7) and the same column (a8 to h8). However, it cannot attack any of the given pieces at positions al, a3, b4, d7, h7, and h8. Therefore, the maximum number of pieces it can attack is 0.

Option B: Position a7
If the queen is placed at a7, it can attack any piece in the same row (a1 to a6) and the same column (a1 to a8). Additionally, it can attack the piece at al diagonally. However, it cannot attack any of the other given pieces. Therefore, the maximum number of pieces it can attack is 1.

Option C: Position c1
If the queen is placed at c1, it can attack any piece in the same row (c2 to c8) and the same column (a1 to h1). Additionally, it can attack the piece at al diagonally. However, it cannot attack any of the other given pieces. Therefore, the maximum number of pieces it can attack is 1.

Option D: Position d3
If the queen is placed at d3, it can attack any piece in the same row (d1 to d8) and the same column (a3 to h3). Additionally, it can attack the pieces at al, a3, b4, and c5 diagonally. However, it cannot attack any of the other given pieces. Therefore, the maximum number of pieces it can attack is 4.

Conclusion:
Out of the given options, placing the queen at position d3 results in the maximum number of pieces being under attack (4 pieces). Therefore, the correct answer is option D.
