The Kelvin-Plank Statement of Second Law

The Kelvin-Plank statement of the second law of thermodynamics states that it is impossible to construct an engine that operates in a cycle and produces no effect other than the absorption of heat from a single reservoir and the performance of an equivalent amount of work. In other words, it is impossible to have a cyclic process in which heat is taken from a single source and converted entirely into work without any heat being rejected to a cooler reservoir. This statement is also known as the heat engine statement of the second law.

Explanation:

The Kelvin-Plank statement explains that a heat engine can never produce work without releasing some amount of heat to a cooler reservoir. This means that in any engine, some amount of heat is always wasted and cannot be converted into work. This is because it is impossible to completely convert heat into work without any loss.

For example, consider a heat engine that takes in heat from a high-temperature reservoir and converts a part of it into work. The remaining heat is released to a low-temperature reservoir. The work produced by the engine is equal to the difference between the heat absorbed and the heat released. Therefore, the efficiency of the engine is always less than 100%.

Conclusion:

In conclusion, the Kelvin-Plank statement of the second law of thermodynamics provides the foundation for the design and operation of heat engines. It sets a limit on the maximum efficiency that can be achieved by an engine and explains why it is impossible to have a cyclic process that converts all the heat into work without any loss.
